2 Days in Ljubljana: Slovenia Gateway Plan
Two days is the minimum for the Ljubljana-as-a-base plan: one day to land and get oriented in the city, one day for the single trip you cannot skip, Lake Bled paired with the Vintgar Gorge next door. Want more of Slovenia? The 3-day plan adds the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle.
Book these before you go:
- A Vintgar Gorge timed-entry slot, sold hourly and worth locking in 48 hours ahead once summer gets busy.
- A hotel near the main bus station, Day 2 starts early to beat the Bled tour buses.
- Cash for the pletna boat to Bled Island, the boatman takes cash only.
| Day | Focus | Distance/time from Ljubljana |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Ljubljana orientation, arrival | Home base |
| Day 2 | Lake Bled + Vintgar Gorge | ~45-55 min drive, ~1hr bus |
Day 1: Land and Get Oriented
Ljubljana Airport sits about 26km north with no rail link at all, so a public bus (roughly €4.10-4.50, about 30-50 minutes) or a taxi (€35-50) gets you into the center. Spend the afternoon on foot around Preseren Square and the Triple Bridge, the whole old town is car-free and flat, then a riverside dinner of struklji, the national rolled dumpling, at somewhere like Druga Violina. Full in-city detail lives in the Ljubljana city guide . Confirm your Vintgar Gorge slot and check tomorrow’s weather before bed.
Day 2: Lake Bled and the Vintgar Gorge
Leave early, this is the whole point of the day. A direct Arriva bus takes about an hour (€6-8) or a car does it in 45 to 55 minutes. The pletna boat to Bled Island is €20 adult round trip, cash only to the boatman, plus a separate €12 if you want inside the island church and up the bell tower. Bled Castle above the lake is €19 adult in 2026. Push on to the Vintgar Gorge, wooden walkways through a river canyon just 4km outside town, €15 adult, sold in timed hourly slots. Arriving at opening beats the tour-bus crowds that swamp the lake by mid-morning. A guided Bled day tour covers the transport and the boat ride if you’d rather not manage it yourself. Official hours are on bled.si .
Is One Day Enough for Both Bled and Vintgar?
Yes, if you start at opening. The lake itself needs 2-3 hours for the boat, the castle view and a walk around the shore; the gorge is a further hour or two of easy walking. Arrive after 10am in summer and the math gets tighter, since Bled’s crowds and the gorge’s timed slots both work against a late start.
Where to Eat Before Heading Back to Ljubljana
Skip the lakefront cafes for the cream cake, kremna rezina, which runs €7-9 a slice with the view tax built in. Walk a few streets back into town and the same cake costs closer to €4 at a local bakery, same recipe, no lake view required.
Where to Stay
Base yourself near Ljubljana’s main bus station for this trip, since Day 2 starts with an early departure either way. Compare Ljubljana hotel rates on Booking.com before dates move.
Book the Vintgar Gorge slot the moment your Bled day is confirmed, it sells out faster than the lake ever does.
