7 Days in Lucerne, Switzerland

A full week is more time than a single mountain trip needs, but it’s genuinely the right length if you want all four excursions, Pilatus, Rigi, Titlis, and Stanserhorn, without racing between them. If six days suits you better, see the 6-day itinerary instead.
Book these before you go
Day 1: The Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument, and the Glacier Garden
Walk the Chapel Bridge, honestly a partial 1993 reconstruction but still the defining sight, with the octagonal Water Tower at its end. In the afternoon, visit the Lion Monument, a memorial to the Swiss Guards killed in 1792, and the adjoining Glacier Garden, with its Ice Age potholes and 1896 mirror maze.
Rough cost for the day: the Glacier Garden runs around CHF 24 adult (verify); a casual lunch runs CHF 25-40.
Concrete tip: visit the Chapel Bridge early morning, before the tour groups arrive.
Day 2: The Musegg Wall, the Old Town squares, and the churches
Climb one of the free Musegg Wall towers, roughly April through November, for an elevated view over the Old Town. Wander Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt, then step inside the Baroque Jesuit Church and the Hofkirche. Cross the quieter Spreuerbrücke, which carries its original 17th-century “Dance of Death” panels, on your way back.
Rough cost for the day: the churches and the wall are free; a casual dinner runs CHF 35-55.
Concrete tip: check which of the four Musegg towers are open before you climb, the set shifts year to year.
Day 3: Mount Pilatus, the Golden Round Trip
Bus to Kriens, aerial cableway up, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down to Alpnachstad, boat back across the lake. Seasonal, roughly May through November.

Concrete tip: verify the current cogwheel schedule before you go, it shifts year to year.
Day 4: Mount Rigi, Europe’s first mountain railway
Reached from Vitznau, Arth-Goldau, or Weggis, opened in 1871, fully free with the Swiss Travel Pass, unlike Pilatus.

Concrete tip: pack a picnic, summit-restaurant prices run higher than in the city.
Day 5: Mount Titlis and Engelberg
Train to Engelberg, then a shuttle bus to the valley station. Year-round glacier terrain at the 3,020-meter summit, the Cliff Walk suspension bridge, and the Ice Flyer chairlift. The Rotair is closed 17 August to 11 December 2026, the Titlis Connect cable car substitutes during that window (verify).

Concrete tip: dress for real winter conditions at the summit regardless of the season in Lucerne.
Day 6: Stanserhorn and a lake cruise toward Rütli Meadow
Ride the historic funicular from Stans, then the CabriO, the world’s only open-top double-decker cable car, to Stanserhorn’s 1,898-meter summit. In the afternoon, take an SGV boat toward the Rütli Meadow, the site traditionally said to mark the 1291 founding oath of the Swiss Confederation, accessible only by water or on foot.
Rough cost for the day: a Stanserhorn return runs around CHF 90 or more (verify); the lake cruise adds a modest fare.
Concrete tip: treat Rütli with a touch of reverence, it’s a patriotic pilgrimage site for many Swiss, not an ordinary lake stop.
Day 7: The city’s museums, and departure
Spend the morning at the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus), with the Hans Erni Museum inside it, then choose between the Rosengart Collection (Picasso and Klee) and the Bourbaki Panorama (the 1881 circular painting of the Franco-Prussian War internment) depending on which interests you more.

Concrete tip: build in a buffer before your departure train, Zurich is only about 1 hour away if you’re flying out of ZRH.
