2 Days in Marrakech: First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: Medina Arrival and Jemaa el-Fnaa
- Land at Menara Airport and agree your petit taxi fare at the official ticket counter before you get in, roughly 100-150 MAD to the medina by day. Cars can’t reach the derbs, so you’ll walk the last stretch from the nearest bab to your riad; tell the riad your ETA so a porter can meet you.
- Check in, drop your bags, and walk into Jemaa el-Fnaa while it’s still setting up, juice carts, water-sellers, vendors unpacking, a completely different mood than the night version.
- Wander north into the souks , part of the Medina of Marrakesh UNESCO World Heritage Site: Souk Semmarine for leather and babouches, opening quotes run 250-400 MAD for slippers that should settle closer to 120-180 once you’ve countered a couple of times. Rahba Kedima square handles spices, a legitimate tin of saffron runs 40-70 MAD.
- Skip anyone offering a “free” walk to the tanneries, it’s a setup for a hard sell once you’re inside and the door’s closed behind you.
- Return to Jemaa el-Fnaa after dark for the numbered food stalls, tagine and grilled skewers running 20-50 MAD a plate. Confirm the price before you order anything, and pick whichever stall has the longest line of locals.
Day 2: Bahia Palace and Jardin Majorelle
- Bahia Palace first thing, about 100 MAD, open 9am-5pm (Morocco’s official ticketing portal covers some state monuments), the carved cedar ceilings and painted doors are worth the early start before tour groups arrive.
- Ben Youssef Medersa next, 50 MAD, daily 9am-7pm, zellige tilework that rivals anything else in the city.
- Book the first available slot at Jardin Majorelle , timed tickets only: 230 MAD for the garden and Berber Museum, 330 MAD combined with the YSL Museum.
- Walk to Koutoubia Mosque for the exterior and gardens, non-Muslims can’t enter the interior anywhere in Morocco, so don’t plan around getting inside.
- Farewell dinner at a riad restaurant, and seek out tanjia at least once, the city’s own slow-cooked urn dish and a better souvenir than anything you’ll haggle for.
Save your riad’s phone number and gate meeting point in your phone before you land, not after you’re already circling the wrong alley.
