3 Days in Mecca: A Pilgrim's Plan
Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca. This 3-day plan is the 2-day core (arrival, Umrah, a repeat visit) plus a third day for a short ziyarah of Mecca’s sacred sites. With more time, the 4-day plan adds the sacred hills properly.
Before you travel
- Nusuk Umrah permit and visa
- MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate
- Ihram garments (2 seamless white cloths for men; modest dress for women)
- A hotel near the Haram, verified through Nusuk (search hotels in Mecca )
Day 1: Arrival and Umrah
Morning
Arrive at Jeddah (JED) and travel to Mecca, roughly 70km, by car or the Haramain High-Speed Railway. Check in, then enter ihram before the miqat if you haven’t already.
Afternoon
Perform tawaf, 7 anticlockwise circuits of the Kaaba, then sa’i, 7 passes between Safa and Marwa, and close ihram with halq or taqsir at the Masjid al-Haram.
Evening
Rest and eat simply near your hotel. Drink Zamzam water from the coolers around the mosque.
Day 2: Rest and repeat Umrah
Morning
A quieter, unhurried tawaf at Fajr, now that the core rites are complete.
Afternoon
A brief, respectful ziyarah to Jannat al-Mu’alla cemetery, where Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, the Prophet’s first wife, is buried. There is no formal rite here; it’s a place for quiet reflection rather than sightseeing.
Evening
Return to the Haram for Isha prayer.
Day 3: Reflection and departure
Morning
A final tawaf and time inside the mosque before checking out.
Afternoon
Travel back to Jeddah for your onward flight, building in extra time for Hajj-season traffic if applicable.
| Site | What it is | Formal rite? |
|---|---|---|
| Masjid al-Haram | The Grand Mosque and the Kaaba | Yes, tawaf and sa’i |
| Jannat al-Mu’alla | Historic cemetery | No, ziyarah only |
One concrete tip: keep day 3 light. Pilgrims who pack a full schedule into their last day before travelling often arrive at the airport exhausted rather than settled, which undercuts the calm that a good Umrah is meant to leave you with.
