5 Days in Oman: Road Trip Plan

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions a wider Oman road trip can reach, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat itself has not been hit and is operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.

Five days is the compact loop done properly: a full day in Nizwa’s interior instead of a rushed pass, a mountain night on Jebel Akhdar, a desert camp, and a wadi stop on the way home. Drop to the 4-day plan if that’s tight, or see the 6-day version to extend all the way to Sur and the turtles. A genuine 4x4 is required for part of this route, not just any rental car.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Muscat to Nizwa

Morning

A quick pass through Muscat before picking up a 4x4 rental.

Afternoon

Drive about 1.5-2 hours to Nizwa.

Evening

Nizwa Souq and a first look at Nizwa Fort. Overnight in Nizwa.

Day 2: Nizwa’s Interior

Morning

Nizwa Fort properly, plus the Friday goat market (07:30-09:30) if your day lands on a Friday.

Afternoon

Bahla Fort, Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort, Jabrin Castle for its painted ceilings, and Al Hamra with the old mud-brick village of Misfat al Abriyeen.

Evening

Second night in Nizwa.

Day 3: Up to Jebel Akhdar

Morning

Drive up to Jebel Akhdar. A checkpoint at the base enforces 4x4-only access and turns away 2WD vehicles.

Afternoon

The Saiq Plateau, around 2,000 metres up, Diana’s Point, and Wadi Bani Habib, an abandoned terraced village.

Evening

Overnight on the mountain.

Day 4: Jebel Akhdar to Wahiba Sands

Morning

Descend from the mountain.

Afternoon

Drive toward Wahiba Sands. The highway is 2WD, but the dunes themselves require a 4x4, most camps handle the final transfer.

Evening

Dune bashing or a camel ride, then an overnight desert camp under the stars.

Day 5: Wadi Bani Khalid to Muscat

Morning

Wadi Bani Khalid, whose big, easily accessible pools are a five-minute paved walk in, no hike required.

Afternoon

Drive back to Muscat, about 2-2.5 hours from the wadi.

Evening

Arrive in Muscat for a final night or onward flight.

One concrete tip: Wadi Bani Khalid’s pools need no hiking gear at all, a five-minute paved path gets you there, so it’s the better no-fuss cool-off stop on the way home compared with a hike-in wadi like Wadi Shab.
