4 Days in Santorini: First-Timer Itinerary
Four days takes the 3 day plan , Fira, Oia, Akrotiri, a beach day and wine, and adds a full day on the water: the Nea Kameni volcano hike and the Palea Kameni hot springs swim. Book these before you go: a caldera-view room , a volcano and hot springs boat tour (seasonal, runs mid-March through November only), and a wine tasting , all of which fill up weeks ahead in July-August.

Day 1: Fira and the caldera walk to Imerovigli
Arrive via JTR or the Athinios ferry port, get to Fira by bus or transfer. If arriving by cruise tender at the Old Port, take the cable car up (EUR 10 one-way), not the donkeys on the same steps, a documented welfare issue rather than a tradition. Afternoon in Fira, then the caldera path to Firostefani and Imerovigli, watching sunset there or from Skaros Rock instead of Oia’s crowd. Dinner in Fira or Imerovigli.
Day 2: Oia’s blue domes and Akrotiri
Oia early to beat the crowds, down the roughly 300 steps to Ammoudi Bay for seafood (priced by weight, roughly EUR 70-120/kg), then back to Fira for Akrotiri in the afternoon, EUR 20 flat since the 2025 reform (verify hours on the Ministry of Culture’s site ). Dinner in Oia or Fira.
Day 3: Kamari beach, Ancient Thera and wine
Morning on Kamari’s black sand, then a hike or taxi up to Ancient Thera (EUR 10, closed Wednesdays), then a caldera-facing Assyrtiko tasting (roughly EUR 150/person for a small-group tour of three wineries) in the late afternoon. Dinner and, if you haven’t already, a caldera sunset cruise .
Day 4: The volcano and hot springs by boat
This is the day the trip turns from sightseeing into an adventure. Take a boat tour from the Old Port to Nea Kameni, the dark, low volcanic islet in the middle of the caldera, still officially active but not the dramatic cone you might picture, and hike across the crater floor (roughly 3 hours total), genuinely strange, satisfying ground to stand on once you know what made this whole island. Most tours continue to Palea Kameni for a swim in naturally warm sulphur springs, worth every slightly sulphurous second. Note the roughly EUR 5 landing fee on Nea Kameni is often cash-only and separate from the tour price. Basic caique sailings run EUR 15-65, catamaran packages with food from around EUR 110. Evening back in Fira or Imerovigli, a slower dinner after a full day on the water.
Is 4 days enough to include the volcano tour?
Yes, comfortably. Four days is the shortest plan where the volcano and hot springs boat tour doesn’t feel rushed alongside Fira, Oia, Akrotiri, a beach day and wine. It still skips Thirassia and any other island day trip, which the 5 and 6 day plans add.
When does the volcano boat tour run?
Roughly mid-March through November, with day tours typically stopping by the end of October. If you’re visiting in winter, this is one activity you simply won’t get to do, plan accordingly rather than assuming it runs year-round.
