3 Days in Srinagar: First-Timer Plan

Read this before you book. Jammu & Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region. On 22 April 2025, militants killed 26 people, mostly tourists, near Pahalgam, an attack that briefly escalated into an India-Pakistan military confrontation before a May 2025 ceasefire held (verify current status). The US State Department advises against travel to J&K outside Ladakh, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar and Gulmarg directly, so check your own government’s current wording before you book. Srinagar and Gulmarg are both reported open and busy under heavy security, so this plan is written for a precaution-first three days with a registered operator.
Three days takes the 2-day core , Dal Lake plus the Mughal gardens and old city, and adds a full day trip to Gulmarg, the closest and most reliably open of the region’s mountain excursions.
Book these before you go
- A registered Dal or Nigeen Lake houseboat
- A Gulmarg gondola or day tour from Srinagar
- A registered driver for the Gulmarg road trip
- Your India e-visa via the official portal
Day 1: Dal Lake
Morning
Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a registered Dal or Nigeen Lake houseboat, and settle in.
Afternoon
A Dal Lake shikara ride, officially about INR 750-800 an hour (agree the fare through your houseboat first, since ghat touts often quote two to three times that), past the floating gardens and Char Chinar island.
Evening
Dinner on the houseboat or lakeside, then a walk along the Boulevard.
Day 2: Mughal Gardens and the Old City
Morning
Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar’s two largest Mughal gardens, both built in the 17th century.
Afternoon
Chashme Shahi and the uphill walk to Pari Mahal for the best lake panorama, then into the old city for Jamia Masjid and the Khanqah of Shah Hamdan, dressed modestly as both are active places of worship.
Evening
Shop for Pashmina at a fixed-price emporium, then a Rogan Josh or Gushtaba dinner.
Day 3: Gulmarg
Morning
Drive about 1.5-2 hours to Gulmarg (roughly 2,650 meters). Ride the Gulmarg Gondola in both phases, Phase 1 to Kongdori (roughly INR 740-810) and Phase 2 up to Apharwat at nearly 3,980 meters (roughly INR 920-1,010).
Afternoon
Lunch in Gulmarg, then time in the summer meadows or, if you’re visiting December-February, on the slopes themselves, one of India’s genuine ski destinations.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for a final dinner and an early night before departure.
Should I add Gulmarg or go straight to Pahalgam on a short trip?
Gulmarg first. It’s the closer drive, the more reliably reported-open of the two, and has the gondola as a single clear headline activity. If you have a fourth day, the 4-day itinerary adds Pahalgam on top of this exact plan.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dal Lake, houseboat | Houseboat rate + INR 750-800 shikara |
| 2 | Mughal gardens, old city | INR 20-30 per garden, verify |
| 3 | Gulmarg gondola | INR 1,800 combined, both phases |
Check the current official advisory before you finalize Gulmarg transport, and travel with a registered operator. For the shorter version of this plan, see the 2-day itinerary ; for more days, see the 5-day itinerary.
One concrete tip: book the Gulmarg taxi or tour the night before, not the morning of. Peak-season demand for the gondola means slots and cars both fill up fast.
