4 Days in Srinagar: First-Timer Plan

Read this before you book. Jammu & Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region. On 22 April 2025, militants killed 26 people, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, an attack that briefly escalated into an India-Pakistan military confrontation before a May 2025 ceasefire held (verify current status). The US State Department advises against travel to J&K outside Ladakh, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam directly, so check your own government’s current wording before you book. All three are reported open under heavy security, so this plan is written for a precaution-first four days with a registered operator.
Four days takes the 3-day core , Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and old city, and Gulmarg, and adds a fourth day for Pahalgam, handled with the honesty the current situation there deserves.
Book these before you go
Day 1: Dal Lake
Morning
Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a registered Dal or Nigeen Lake houseboat, and settle in.
Afternoon
A Dal Lake shikara ride, officially about INR 750-800 an hour, agreed through your houseboat host rather than a ghat tout, past the floating gardens and Char Chinar island.
Evening
Dinner on the houseboat or lakeside, then a walk along the Boulevard.
Day 2: Mughal Gardens and the Old City
Morning
Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar’s two largest 17th-century Mughal gardens.
Afternoon
Chashme Shahi and the uphill walk to Pari Mahal for the best lake panorama, then the old city for Jamia Masjid and the Khanqah of Shah Hamdan, dressed modestly at both.
Evening
Shop for Pashmina at a fixed-price emporium, then a Rogan Josh or Gushtaba dinner.
Day 3: Gulmarg
Morning
Drive about 1.5-2 hours to Gulmarg (roughly 2,650 meters) and ride the Gulmarg Gondola in both phases, Phase 1 to Kongdori (roughly INR 740-810) and Phase 2 to Apharwat at nearly 3,980 meters (roughly INR 920-1,010).
Afternoon
Lunch in Gulmarg, then time in the meadows or, December-February, on the ski slopes.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for dinner.
Day 4: Pahalgam
Morning
Drive about 2.5-3 hours to Pahalgam (roughly 2,740 meters) and spend the morning in the Lidder valley.
Afternoon
The Betaab and Aru valleys are the standard afternoon stops. This is also where the April 2025 attack happened, specifically at Baisaran meadow above the town, not in Pahalgam’s built-up center, so verify Baisaran’s own access status separately from Pahalgam town before you plan to go there, and go only with a registered operator who has current local information.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for a final dinner before departure the next morning.
Is it responsible to visit Pahalgam on a first trip?
Only with current information and a registered operator. Pahalgam town is generally reported open, but treat Baisaran meadow’s status as a separate question, and check your government’s current advisory before you commit to this day. If you’d rather skip Pahalgam entirely, swap in a second Gulmarg day or a Dachigam National Park visit instead.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dal Lake, houseboat | Houseboat rate + INR 750-800 shikara |
| 2 | Mughal gardens, old city | INR 20-30 per garden, verify |
| 3 | Gulmarg gondola | INR 1,800 combined, both phases |
| 4 | Pahalgam valleys | Registered-operator day rate |
For a shorter version, see the 3-day itinerary ; for a fifth day added on, see the 5-day itinerary .
One concrete tip: confirm Baisaran’s current access status with your operator the week of your trip, not months ahead. Conditions there change faster than a guide like this one can track in real time.
