5 Days in Srinagar: First-Timer Plan

Read this before you book. Jammu & Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region. On 22 April 2025, militants killed 26 people, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, an attack that briefly escalated into an India-Pakistan military confrontation before a May 2025 ceasefire held (verify current status). The US State Department advises against travel to J&K outside Ladakh, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg directly, so check your own government’s current wording before you book. All four are reported open under heavy security, so this plan is written for a precaution-first five days with a registered operator.
Five days takes the 4-day plan , Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and old city, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, and adds a fifth day for Sonamarg, the gateway toward Ladakh.
Book these before you go
Day 1: Dal Lake
Morning
Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a registered Dal or Nigeen Lake houseboat, and settle in.
Afternoon
A Dal Lake shikara ride, officially about INR 750-800 an hour, agreed through your houseboat host, past the floating gardens and Char Chinar island.
Evening
Dinner on the houseboat or lakeside, then a Boulevard walk.
Day 2: Mughal Gardens and the Old City
Morning
Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar’s two largest Mughal gardens.
Afternoon
Chashme Shahi and the uphill walk to Pari Mahal, then the old city for Jamia Masjid and the Khanqah of Shah Hamdan.
Evening
Pashmina shopping at a fixed-price emporium, then a Rogan Josh or Gushtaba dinner.
Day 3: Gulmarg
Morning
Drive about 1.5-2 hours to Gulmarg and ride the Gulmarg Gondola in both phases up to nearly 3,980 meters.
Afternoon
Lunch in Gulmarg, then meadow time or, in winter, skiing.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for dinner.
Day 4: Pahalgam
Morning
Drive about 2.5-3 hours to Pahalgam and spend the morning in the Lidder valley.
Afternoon
The Betaab and Aru valleys, with Baisaran meadow’s access status, the April 2025 attack site, verified separately from Pahalgam town before you plan to visit.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for dinner.
Day 5: Sonamarg
Morning
Drive about 2.5 hours to Sonamarg (the “meadow of gold,” roughly 2,800 meters), the gateway toward Zojila Pass and Ladakh.
Afternoon
A short hike or pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier, then lunch back in Sonamarg.
Evening
Return to Srinagar for a final dinner before departure the next morning.
Is five days enough to cover Srinagar’s three main day trips?
Yes, this is the version of the trip most first-timers actually want, one day each for Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg on top of the city itself. A sixth or seventh day adds depth, Dachigam National Park or the region’s quieter lakes, rather than a fourth headline day trip.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dal Lake, houseboat | Houseboat rate + INR 750-800 shikara |
| 2 | Mughal gardens, old city | INR 20-30 per garden, verify |
| 3 | Gulmarg gondola | INR 1,800 combined |
| 4 | Pahalgam valleys | Registered-operator day rate |
| 5 | Sonamarg, Thajiwas Glacier | Registered-operator day rate |
For a shorter version, see the 4-day itinerary ; for more depth, see the 7-day itinerary .
One concrete tip: do Sonamarg last, not third. It’s the furthest push toward higher, colder terrain, and it’s easier to judge how your body is handling the altitude after two other day trips than to gauge it cold on day three.
