6 Days in Trondheim: First-Timer Plan

Six days lets you cover Trondheim’s full sight list at an unhurried pace, with 2 dedicated day trips and a slower final day back in the city.

Day 1

Nidaros Cathedral, entry roughly NOK 120-150, and the Archbishop’s Palace for the crown regalia, then Gamle Bybro into Bakklandet for the afternoon. Dinner at Fagn or Credo, roughly NOK 500-900 for a mid-range meal, is worth booking ahead.

Tip: the cathedral closes during services, check the schedule before your visit.

Day 2

Ferry to Munkholmen from Ravnkloa (roughly NOK 95, verify, seasonal) in the morning, Kristiansten Fortress and its small Donjonen museum in the afternoon.

Tip: the Munkholmen ferry runs only roughly May or June through August or September, have the fortress as a year-round backup.

Day 3

Gråkallbanen tram up to Lian for a morning in Bymarka forest, then Ringve or Rockheim in the afternoon, individual tickets roughly NOK 130-200, or the combined ticket around NOK 230-245. Coffee at Jacobsen & Svart or Dromedar on the way back.

Tip: pack a rain layer, Bymarka has little shelter if the weather turns.

Day 4

Day trip north to Stiklestad, roughly 90km and 1.5 hours by car, for the 1030 battle site, the dioramas and short film at the National Cultural Centre, the 1180 church, and the 30-building folk museum.

Tip: this is a full day on its own, don’t try to fit in a city sight the same morning.

Day 5

Day trip southeast to Røros, roughly 2.5 hours by car or the scenic Rørosbanen train, for the UNESCO-listed old town, the Olavsgruva mine tour, and a strong local food scene.

Tip: an overnight in Røros is more comfortable than a rushed round trip if your schedule has any flexibility.

Day 6

Slow down. Walk the Ladestien coastal path, an easy 8 to 9km stretch along the fjord, or pick a longer loop back in Bymarka. In the afternoon, browse Ravnkloa fish market and the Stiftsgården’s exterior, then use the evening for any museum or neighborhood you missed, Sverresborg, Rockheim, or Bakklandet’s shops.

Tip: this is a good day to buy any Vinmonopolet wine or spirits to bring home, just remember it’s closed on Sundays.

Practical notes

Norway is near-cashless, so a card covers nearly everything, and it’s genuinely expensive, budget a beer at roughly NOK 100-140. Britannia Hotel, Clarion Hotel Trondheim, and Scandic Solsiden remain the best-documented places to stay.
