Grand Mosque in Mecca
The Grand Mosque, Mecca
During the last ten nights of Ramadan, Masjid al-Haram approaches its capacity of 2.5 million worshippers. The latest expansion added space for an additional 300,000 people, and the Saudi government has invested in crowd management infrastructure including digital boards at entrances that display real-time capacity in green when space is available and red when full. At Hajj, the challenges of managing the world’s largest annual gathering of humanity in a few square kilometres remain the central logistical preoccupation of Saudi authorities. This is the scale of what the mosque handles.
Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and one of the most significant sites in Islam. It surrounds the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure that Muslims face during prayer regardless of where on earth they are. The mosque can accommodate upwards of four million worshippers at peak capacity during Hajj, with over 200,000 square metres of internal space and nine minarets reaching 89 metres.
Access is restricted to Muslims. Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca. What follows is aimed at Muslim visitors planning Umrah or Hajj.
The Kaaba and Tawaf
The Kaaba stands at the centre of the mosque’s open courtyard. Performing Tawaf – circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise – is one of the central rituals of both Umrah and Hajj. The circuits are done at multiple levels: on the ground floor around the Kaaba directly, on the first floor walkway, or on the second floor. During Hajj the crowds are intense; during off-peak Umrah months you can complete Tawaf in under an hour.
The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), embedded in the eastern corner of the Kaaba, is kissed or gestured toward during each circuit. Reaching it during busy periods requires patience and is not required for Tawaf to be valid.
Other Key Sites
The Well of Zamzam lies beneath the mosque complex and water is freely available at coolers throughout the building. Pilgrims traditionally drink it and carry containers home.
Safa and Marwah, the two hills commemorating Hagar’s search for water, are now fully enclosed within the mosque as an indoor gallery. The Sa’i walk between them – seven times, approximately 450 metres each pass – is another core Umrah ritual.
Beyond the Mosque
The Cave of Hira on Jabal al-Nour, where the first Quranic revelation is said to have occurred, involves a roughly 45-minute climb. It is strenuous and crowded at peak times; go early morning. The surrounding hills have been dramatically altered by construction but the cave itself remains accessible and draws large numbers of pilgrims.
Mina, the valley where pilgrims spend days during Hajj and perform the ritual stoning at Jamarat, is largely quiet outside the pilgrimage season.
Where to Stay
The Abraj Al-Bait Towers (the Clock Tower complex) visible from much of the city contains the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, a Fairmont hotel – expensive and conveniently adjacent to the mosque. The Hilton Makkah Convention Hotel and Pullman Zamzam Makkah also overlook the mosque and book out months in advance during Ramadan and Hajj.
For Umrah during off-peak months, avoiding both Hajj season and Ramadan, prices drop significantly and the experience is notably more contemplative. The difference between Ramadan Umrah and a quiet February Umrah is the difference between New York at New Year and New York in February.
Practical Notes
In 2026, the Nusuk app is now the required system for booking prayer appointments in the Rawdah Al-Sharifah at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and is increasingly integrated with Umrah pilgrimage management. Download and register before departure. Umrah visas are available online through the Saudi e-visa portal for most nationalities. Dress requirements are strict: ihram garments for male pilgrims performing rituals, modest full-length clothing for women. The mosque interior is kept cool regardless of outdoor temperatures; bring a light layer.
Al-Baik, the Saudi fast-food chain, has multiple locations in Mecca and is genuine Hejazi comfort food between prayers.
