Amman Museum Day: 5 Stops Worth It
Plaster statues older than the pyramids, a real Mars rover prop, and six free villas of contemporary art, all reachable without leaving the city. Amman’s attraction tours stay inside the city limits; Petra and the Dead Sea are a different kind of day, covered elsewhere.
The Jordan Museum, first stop for good reason
Ras Al-Ayn’s Jordan Museum holds two pieces that justify the trip on their own: the Ain Ghazal statues, plaster human figures dated to roughly 7500 BCE and among the oldest large-scale human sculptures ever found, and the Copper Scroll from Cave 3 at Qumran, engraved with a list of 64 hidden temple treasure sites. A Martian Rover in a royal garage
The Royal Automobile Museum, in Al Hussein Public Parks, packs in over 70 vehicles from the personal collections of King Hussein and King Abdullah II: an armored Mercedes, a 1952 Aston Martin DB2, and modern supercars. The showstopper is the full-scale Martian Rover prop from Ridley Scott’s The Martian, donated to Jordan after filming in Wadi Rum. Six villas of free contemporary art
Darat al Funun spreads across six restored 1920s stone villas on Jabal Luwebdeh, wrapped around olive trees and the ruins of a 6th-century Byzantine church. It’s the country’s leading platform for contemporary Arab art, with rotating exhibitions and experimental video, and it costs nothing to walk through.
Two smaller collections worth the detour
The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, also on Jabal Luwebdeh, holds over 3,000 paintings, sculptures, and ceramics from the Arab world, Africa, and Asia for 3 JOD, free with the Jordan Pass. The Tiraz Centre houses the world’s largest private collection of embroidered Palestinian, Jordanian, and Syrian thobs and silver jewelry, also 3 JOD.
The verdict
Pair the Jordan Museum and Royal Automobile Museum in the same morning since they share a park, then walk Jabal Luwebdeh’s free galleries in the afternoon.
