There’s a narrow alley off Prince Mohammad Street where locals and solo travelers sit at the same plastic tables, and nobody thinks twice about a party of one. That’s Hashem Restaurant, running since 1952, and it’s as good a starting point as any for a day of solo sightseeing in Amman. Start with Hashem Hashem serves a classic feast of stuffed falafel, hummus drizzled with olive oil, smoky moutabal, and ful medames, all for around 3 to 5 JOD and cash only.

Ten-meter Corinthian columns, a temple to Hercules, and a marble hand the size of a person, all sitting on a hilltop 850 meters above sea level with the rest of the city spread out below. That’s the opening scene of a day in Amman, and it barely scratches what’s within a short taxi ride. Jabal al-Qal’a, the Citadel The Citadel is where 7,000 years of habitation stack on top of each other in one place: the Roman Temple of Hercules with its surviving columns and colossal marble fragments, a 6th-century Byzantine church, and the 8th-century Umayyad Palace complex with its restored domed gateway and audience hall.

Picture La Traviata staged against 2,000-year-old illuminated Roman stone, six thousand seats rising around you into the dark. That’s a real night out in Amman, not a marketing line, and it’s one of several reasons summer here is worth planning around rather than avoiding for the heat. The Roman Theatre and the Odeon Amman’s Roman Theatre, carved into the cliffside under Emperor Antoninus Pius, seats 6,000 across 33 tiered rows and hosts live music through the summer months, everything from international symphonies to classical Arabic music.

The call to prayer starts somewhere across the valley, gets picked up by the next minaret, and the next, until it’s echoing off every hill in the city at once. Hearing that from a fallen column at the Citadel, right as the sun drops behind the western jabals, is the kind of moment no itinerary can really oversell. Sunset at the Citadel Jabal al-Qal’a, the Citadel hill, is the obvious place to start an evening together.

A 6:30 AM departure from a coach station in Abdali, and three and a half hours later you’re standing in front of the Treasury at Petra. That’s the kind of payoff a bus ticket can deliver here, and Amman’s bus network covers a lot more ground than most first-time visitors expect. Landing and getting into town Queen Alia International Airport is 35 km south of the city, and the Sariyah Airport Express is the fastest way in if you’re watching your budget.
