Amman to Petra: The Multi-Day Plan
Petra is 235 km south of Amman, 3 to 3.5 hours each way on the highway. Do the math and a round trip alone eats 6 to 7 hours before you’ve set foot in the Siq, which is exactly why every route worth taking south builds in at least one night rather than racing there and back.
The Golden Triangle, 3 to 4 days
Day one runs Amman to Wadi Musa (Petra town) via Mount Nebo and Madaba on the King’s Highway, timed to arrive for Petra by Night, a candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury. Petra’s ticket isn’t one flat price
This trips up more travelers than anything else on the route. Anyone spending at least one night somewhere in Jordan pays 50 JOD for a 1-day Petra pass, 55 JOD for 2 days, or 60 JOD for 3 days. Same-day visitors who aren’t overnighting anywhere in the country, cruise passengers mainly, pay a flat 90 JOD instead, nearly double. The King’s Highway, 2 days
The slower, older route south follows a 5,000-year-old trade road through Madaba, the 1,000-meter chasm of Wadi Mujib, the Crusader-era castle at Karak with its vaulted underground corridors, and the Dana Biosphere Reserve , run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. It suits a rental car and an open schedule more than a tour bus, and it lands in Petra by the second evening.
