4 Day Trips Every Amman Visitor Should Take
Pack a bag for the morning, not for a night, and Amman opens up into four completely different worlds: a Roman city, a mosaic map two million tiles wide, a black basalt fort, and a sea you can’t sink in. None of these four need an overnight, which puts them a step ahead of Petra or Wadi Rum right away.
Jerash and Ajloun Castle, the northern loop
Jerash, 48 km north and about 50 minutes by car, ranks among the best-preserved Greco-Roman provincial cities standing anywhere. Walk under Hadrian’s Arch, cross the Oval Forum ringed by 56 Ionic columns, and follow the 800-meter Cardo Maximus, chariot-wheel ruts still cut into the stone. Madaba, Mount Nebo and a Dead Sea float

Mount Nebo, 10 km further, is the memorial mountain where Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land; its church protects 4th-century mosaics for 3 JOD. From there it’s a 25-minute descent to the Dead Sea shore. Highway 40 runs straight into flat basalt desert to three Umayyad sites: Qasr Amra (85 km, a UNESCO-listed 8th-century bathhouse with vivid early Islamic frescoes), Qasr Al-Kharana (65 km, a lone fortress with arrow slits and corner towers), and Qasr Al-Azraq (100 km, T.E. As-Salt, the Ottoman hill town
As-Salt, 30 km northwest and 35 minutes by car, was once the region’s administrative capital, spread across three limestone hills. The marked Harmony Trail winds through 19th-century Ottoman merchant mansions and historic stairways, and it’s free to walk.
