Guatemala Day Trips by Drive Time
Travel advisory: the US and UK governments both advise extra caution in Guatemala over crime, including against travel to parts of the border with Mexico and certain districts of Guatemala City. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before mapping out day trips from Antigua.
Antigua is the most common base for Guatemala day trips, and how far each destination sits from it does more to shape a day than the destination itself. Here is what fits inside a day, sorted by drive time.
Under 90 minutes
Pacaya Volcano is roughly 1.5 hours from Antigua by road, with a moderate hike across ash fields to steam vents where a local guide, mandatory at Q100 foreign entry, leads the walk to the marshmallow-roasting spot. Iximché, near Tecpán, is a similar distance: the 15th-century fortified Kaqchikel capital, with active ceremonial altars still in use and far fewer visitors than Tikal. See guided Pacaya hike options on GetYourGuide .
Around 2 to 3 hours
Lake Atitlán’s villages sit about 2-3 hours from Antigua by road to Panajachel, then a public lancha for Q15-25 a ride onward to San Pedro or San Juan La Laguna. Cross in the morning: a strong afternoon wind called the Xocomil builds most days and turns the water choppy by early-to-mid afternoon. Chichicastenango, roughly 2.5 hours away, runs its market Thursdays and Sundays; at Santo Tomás Church, the 18 front steps stay reserved for Maya ceremonies, so visitors use the side door instead.
Beyond a single day’s drive
Tikal and Semuc Champey both sit too far from Antigua for a same-day round trip: each is roughly 8-10 hours by road one way. Tikal is reachable as an overnight add-on via a TAG Airlines flight from Guatemala City to Flores, trading the highway haul for about an hour in the air; foreign adults pay Q150 at the gate area, bought online at boletos.culturaguate.gob.gt or in advance at a BANTRAB branch. Check Tikal-area flights and tours on Viator .
Getting there safely
Every one of these runs is by road or, for Flores, by air; Guatemala has no passenger rail network to fall back on. Book a licensed tourist shuttle for the road legs rather than a public “chicken bus,” which the US Embassy advises visitors to avoid. The multi-day trips guide covers what happens once a destination stops being a day trip and becomes an overnight leg of its own.
A timing tip
Start Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango trips early. Both depend on being back on the road, or off the water, before the afternoon traffic and wind pick up, and a late start eats into the only part of the day that runs smoothly.
