Luxembourg Day Trips Out of the Capital

From the capital, nothing in the Grand Duchy is far. The country measures about 82 km by 57 km, and you pay no fare on second-class trains, trams or buses, so the cost of a day trip is whatever you spend on entry fees and lunch. First class on trains is the only paid tier. Journeys that cross a border are different: the stretch beyond the frontier needs a ticket, so ask CFL before you go to Trier or Metz.

How to choose

Pick the trip by how much changing of vehicles you want. The Moselle is the simplest. The north needs a train followed by a bus. Echternach and the Mullerthal start with a tram. Bus numbers are revised from time to time, so build each connection on mobiliteit.lu the evening before.

Moselle: Remich, Grevenmacher and Schengen

The river runs 42 km from Schengen to Wasserbillig, with wine villages on the Luxembourg bank.

  • Remich. Caves St Martin offers a guided tour of about 45 minutes through limestone tunnels, ending with a glass of wine or cremant for EUR 9. Listed days are Wednesday to Sunday, mid-March to mid-December.
  • Grevenmacher. Caves Bernard-Massard runs a tour with a short film and one glass for about EUR 8, on Wednesdays to Sundays from April to October and by arrangement in winter.
  • Schengen. The museum at 1 Rue Robert Goebbels is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 and costs EUR 5, with EUR 3 for ages 7 to 17. The ticket also covers the boat Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa. Segments of the Berlin Wall stand on the Place des Etoiles outside.

North: Vianden and Clervaux

Vianden. Ride a train to Ettelbruck or Diekirch and finish on a local bus. The castle charges EUR 13 for adults, EUR 7 for students from 13 with a card and EUR 4 for ages 6 to 12. Doors open at 10:00 and close at 16:00 in winter, 17:00 in March and October, and 18:00 from April to September, with last entry half an hour earlier. It is shut on 1 January, 2 November and 25 December. The town also lists a Victor Hugo house with Thursday to Sunday afternoon hours and an entry fee of about EUR 6, so confirm before walking over. The chairlift above town runs from about April to October.

Clervaux. The northern line takes roughly an hour. Inside the castle, The Family of Man, Edward Steichen’s photography collection, is on view Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00 until 1 January 2027, for EUR 6, EUR 4 reduced and free to age 21. A free guided tour runs on Sundays at 16:00 if you reserve.

East: Echternach and the Mullerthal

Take the tram to the Luxexpo terminal in Kirchberg and change to a bus that leaves about every 30 minutes. Echternach has the St Willibrord Basilica, a Roman villa museum with free entry and a lake with a designated swimming zone in the May to September season. Trail walkers should know that hunters are active from mid-October to January or February, and the hunt dates are posted on the Mullerthal map.

Across the border

Sites of remembrance

The Battle of the Bulge was fought across the north and east of the country. These places call for a quiet, respectful visit, and they are not leisure stops.

  • The National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights in Esch-sur-Alzette is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Adults pay EUR 5, and students and under-21s enter free.
  • The National Museum of Military History in Diekirch keeps the same days and hours. It charges EUR 5 for adults and EUR 3 for teens and students.
  • The Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and is free to enter. Ask the staff about any work near General Patton’s grave.
  • Bastogne and its war museum lie in Belgium, about an hour away by FlixBus, so check the operator’s timetable.

Walkers in this region should keep to waymarked paths and leave metal objects in fields and woods untouched.
