Marseille Day Trips by Season

The best day trip from Marseille changes with the calendar. In June the Calanques come with rules, and in November the towns inland are the easier choice.

June to September: the Calanques regime

From 1 June to 30 September the prefecture publishes a fire-risk map for each massif every evening, covering the next day. On a red day, land access to the massifs is forbidden and the Route des Crêtes closes. Boat tours still sail but do not land, and the Frioul islands stay open. Check the map on the Calanques National Park site or in the Mes Calanques app the night before, and keep a second plan in your pocket.

On top of that, Sugiton and Pierres Tombées need a free online reservation on busy summer dates. The quota is 400 people a day, with up to 5 per booking. Carry 2 to 3 litres of water per person, because the trails have no shade, no bins and no taps.

Boats from Cassis

The TER train from Saint-Charles reaches Cassis in about 25 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes, for around €8.40 each way or €5.90 with the ZOU! Malin card. A local shuttle bus links the station to the harbour in about 10 minutes. From the quay, circuits run at about €21 for three calanques (1 hour), €25 for five (1h20), €29 for eight (1h50) and €33 for nine (2h20). Cooler months: Aix, Arles and Avignon

Once the fire regime ends, the cities are the easier days out.

  • Aix-en-Provence: 30 to 40 minutes by TER or the express bus, from about €10.90 (€7.70 with ZOU! Malin). Walk the Cours Mirabeau and visit Cézanne’s studio at €6.50.
  • Arles: 50 to 55 minutes by direct TER, roughly €13 to €20. The Roman amphitheatre seats 20,000, and the LUMA tower is a short walk from the old centre.
  • Avignon: the TGV takes 32 to 36 minutes at €14 to €28 booked ahead. The Palais des Papes costs €16, or €19.50 with the Pont d’Avignon.

The Camargue

The Rhône delta lies about 80 km west of the city. Pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam the lagoons, and the Pont de Gau bird park charges €8 for adults and €5 for ages 4 to 12. Organised 4x4 day tours from Marseille cost about €110 to €140, while a rental car gives more freedom.

Inside the city in any season

The Vieux-Port boat to the Château d’If is open all year but closed on Mondays from October to March, and the sea shuttles run only in the warm months, so check RTM.
