Romantic Marseille: Free to Splurge
Marseille can be romantic at almost any budget. The best sunset in the city costs nothing, and the splurge is a single dinner.
Free: sunset, a footbridge and a long bench
Notre-Dame de la Garde stands on a 154-metre hill, and its terraces are free. They open daily from 07:00 and close at 19:15 from April to September and 18:15 from October to March, so in the cooler months go up in the late-afternoon light. Buses climb the hill, and the walk from the Vieux-Port takes about 25 minutes.
After dark the 115-metre MuCEM footbridge, which connects Fort Saint-Jean to the J4 terrace, is free and looks over the harbour lights. The Corniche Kennedy has a concrete bench of nearly 3 km, and the walk from the Plage des Catalans to the Vallon des Auffes is a quiet way to end the day.
Under €30: the ferry and a Cassis afternoon
The old ferry-boat across the Vieux-Port costs €0.50 for a three-minute crossing. For a half-day, the TER to Cassis takes about 25 minutes at around €8.40 each way. Walk the pastel quays under Cap Canaille, then add a harbour boat circuit from about €21 (three calanques) to €33 (nine). Check the Cassis tourist office for times.
Dinner: €65 and up
Chez Fonfon, at 140 rue du Vallon des Auffes, serves bouillabaisse at about €65 per person, and it is ordered a day or two ahead. A table near the boats under the viaduct is the one to ask for.
The splurge: Auffo and a sunset sail
Auffo, at 158 rue du Vallon des Auffes, holds one Michelin star in 2026 and costs roughly €95 to €210 per person. Reserve it early. A sunset sail from the Vieux-Port or Pointe-Rouge shows the coast from the water. Operators and prices vary, so compare sunset sailing trips on GetYourGuide .
With a car: the Route des Crêtes
The road runs along the Cap Canaille cliffs, which drop 394 metres to the sea. From 1 June to 30 September it closes on red fire-risk days, and the Calanques National Park site publishes the next-day map each evening.
