Marseille Trips: First Visit or Return

How many nights you give Marseille depends on whether it is your first visit or your second. The first time, the city itself is the trip, and on a return visit it becomes the base for somewhere else.

First visit: three nights in town

Three nights cover the essentials without rushing.

  • Day one: the Vieux-Port fish market, Le Panier on foot, then the MuCEM footbridge and the Fort Saint-Jean grounds, both free.
  • Day two: Notre-Dame de la Garde in the morning, which is free and has views of the whole bay, then the Cosquer cave replica.
  • Day three: Cassis and the Calanques by train and boat, with dinner on the harbour.

A fourth night is the moment to add Aix-en-Provence, which is 30 to 40 minutes away. The 3-day itinerary lays the same days out in order.

Return visit: pick a second base

Once the city is familiar, a night or two elsewhere gives the Provence loop real depth. Regional TER trains link the main valley cities, so no rental car is needed.

  • Arles: the Roman amphitheatre, the antique theatre, the Van Gogh trail and the LUMA tower. It is 50 to 55 minutes from Saint-Charles.
  • The Camargue: allow a second night near Arles or Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer for the flamingo lagoons and the Pont de Gau bird park, which charges €8 for adults.
  • Avignon: the Palais des Papes costs €16, or €19.50 with the Pont d’Avignon, and a TGV takes 32 to 36 minutes. Book a time slot online.
  • Aix-en-Provence: the Cours Mirabeau and Cézanne’s studio at €6.50 reward an evening, when the day visitors have left.

Arriving and leaving

From Paris, the TGV INOUI reaches Saint-Charles in about 3 hours 18 minutes, almost hourly. Fares depend on how early you book, so check SNCF Connect . From the airport, the shuttle (line A1) runs to Saint-Charles in 30 to 50 minutes and costs €15 single or €26 return. The Marseille airport site has the timetable.

Getting around on a longer stay

An RTM 72-hour pass costs €14 and a 7-day pass costs €15.50. Cheaper trips use a €1.70 single ticket, or a carnet of ten for €15. Station hubs such as Saint-Charles draw pickpockets, so keep bags closed while you wait for connections. Tickets and maps are at rtm.fr .

Where the extra nights fit in summer

From 1 June to 30 September, a red fire-risk day can close the Calanques massifs. Build one spare day into any summer stay so a closure moves your Cassis day rather than cancelling it.

Tip: leave Marseille before 10:00 on travel days and put the Palais des Papes slot first, since the palace is open from 09:00.
