Munich Day Trips From Easy to Long Days
Some Munich day trips fit between breakfast and a late lunch, and others eat the whole day. Sorting them by effort helps you pick one that matches your energy and your train times.
Low effort: under an hour from the centre
Dachau lies about 20 km north-west of Munich, roughly 45 minutes door to door. Take the S2 to Dachau station (about 25 minutes), then bus 726 to the memorial entrance. Buy a ticket that covers Dachau in the MVV app or at a machine, because it sits outside Zone M. The KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau is the memorial of the first Nazi concentration camp. Entry is free, it opens daily 9:00 to 17:00, and English tours at 11:00 and 13:00 cost €4 for ages 13 and over. The audio guide is €5 (€4 reduced). The official programmes are for visitors aged 13 and over, and bringing children under 12 is not recommended. Plan on at least three hours, and see kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de .
Medium effort: mountains and a border city
The Zugspitze is about 90 km south, with a direct train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in roughly 1 hour 30. From there a cogwheel train and cable cars climb to Germany’s highest summit at 2,962 m. The summer round trip is €78 for adults, valid to 22 November 2026, and the winter tariff starts after that; check zugspitze.de . The Partnach Gorge makes a good walk on the way.
Salzburg is about 140 km east and 1 hour 30 by Railjet, which needs a normal fare. The regional-only Bayern-Ticket is slower and does not cover Railjet. Mozart’s birthplace, the Mirabell gardens and Hohensalzburg Fortress fill a day.
Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey are about 95 km south-west, around 1 hour 45. Linderhof is the one palace Ludwig II completed, with a Venus Grotto, and Ettal has a Benedictine brewery.
High effort: the long days
Neuschwanstein is 125 km away and takes about 3 hours each way. The route is a regional train to Füssen (about 2 hours 10), bus 78 to Hohenschwangau, then a steep 30 to 40 minute climb or a carriage or shuttle. Entry is by timed guided tour only: €21 (€20 reduced) plus a €2.50 online fee, booked at hohenschwangau.de . The Schwangau through-road is shut until about mid-December 2026, so expect a detour via Hohenschwangau. The Marienbrücke viewpoint is free, though ice and snow close it. A guided coach option on GetYourGuide saves the logistics.
The Kehlsteinhaus above Berchtesgaden runs until about 8 November, weather permitting. The bus costs €31 for adults and €16 for children aged 6 to 14. Check berchtesgaden.de for the day’s status before you go.
Choosing
With one free day and fair weather, take the Zugspitze. With a wet forecast, go to Salzburg, which has indoor sights. Neuschwanstein needs a booked slot weeks ahead. More ideas sit in the multi-day trips guide .
Tip: tickets and weather decide everything, so book the Neuschwanstein slot first and choose the day around it.
