Munich Overnights: What to Book by Season
An overnight from Munich changes with the calendar more than most trips. A route that is easy in July can need a detour in November, so choose by season.
Autumn: now to late November
Berchtesgaden is an October and early November trip. The Kehlsteinhaus runs until about 8 November, weather dependent, with a bus at €31 for adults and €16 for children aged 6 to 14. See berchtesgaden.de for the daily status.
The Zugspitze summer tariff of €78 for adults is valid until 22 November 2026, and an overnight in Garmisch-Partenkirchen gives you a clear morning on the summit. The winter tariff begins on 27 November, so check zugspitze.de for its price. The Starnberger See ships follow an autumn timetable: from 5 to 18 October one ship sails twice a day and another sails at weekends. Times are on seenschifffahrt.de .
Winter: the Füssen detour
A night in Füssen puts you beside Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The Schwangau through-road is shut until about mid-December 2026, so expect to reach the castles via Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein admits visitors by timed guided tour only, at €21 (€20 reduced) plus a €2.50 online fee, via hohenschwangau.de . The Marienbrücke is free but closes in ice and snow, and its status is posted daily. Munich itself adds Christmas markets from 20 November to 24 December 2026, with 130-plus stalls on Marienplatz. You can check Füssen hotel rates on Booking.com once your dates are fixed.
Spring and early summer
The Zugspitze summer tariff opens on 23 May, and the Bavarian State Opera runs its festival in June and July at the National Theatre, so a Munich night plus a mountain day fits well. Kehlstein guided tours start in mid-May.
Summer
Neuschwanstein midday slots between 10:00 and 14:00 sell out in peak summer, so book weeks ahead and stay in Füssen the night before. Salzburg works in any season: it is 1 hour 30 by Railjet, which needs a normal fare, and an overnight lets you see the fortress lit in the evening.
Planning any season
Reaching Füssen takes a regional train of about 2 hours 10, then bus 78 to Hohenschwangau. The Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month for regional trains, though Railjet needs a normal ticket. A single MVV ticket in Zone M is €4.20. Compare ideas in the day trips guide or the four-day itinerary .
Tip: pick the trip first by what is open on your dates, then book the Neuschwanstein or Zugspitze slot before the hotel.
