One-Day Outings in Trinidad and Tobago

Travel advice as of October 2026: the US State Department tells travellers to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime. The UK FCDO rates violent crime as high and asks for particular caution in downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah. Pick the outing by mood

Trinidad outings start in Port of Spain, and Tobago outings start in Crown Point or Scarborough. Every trip below fits inside one day. Fares and fees are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$), and a registered taxi or a hired driver is the easiest way to link the stops.

For a beach lunch: Maracas Bay (Trinidad)

The Saddle Road from Port of Spain to the north coast takes about 45 to 60 minutes each way, and weekend traffic can stretch that. Leave early or go on a weekday. Bake and shark from the beach stalls is the classic meal, and Richard’s is the stall most visitors name. No 2026 price was found, so ask before you order. The bay is open coast, with surf and rip currents, and lifeguard towers are often unstaffed. Swim only beside a posted lifeguard, follow the flags and keep children close. Maracas Falls is a separate guided hike and does not fit into a beach afternoon.

For temples and museums: central Trinidad

Plan four to five hours with a hired driver for this loop through Waterloo and Carapichaima.

Temple in the Sea, Waterloo. Sewdass Sadhu started building in 1947, carrying stones and cement out by bicycle, and the causeway and temple were finished in 1952. He died in 1970. The temple decayed and was rebuilt in 1995, 100 yards farther out than the original. Worshippers still use it, so cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes.
Hanuman Murti, Carapichaima. The statue stands 85 ft tall at the Dattatreya Yoga Centre on Orange Field Road. It was consecrated in June 2003 and is described as the tallest Hanuman statue outside India. Listed visiting hours are 09:00 to 12:00 and 17:00 to 19:00, and shoes come off at the gate.
Indian Caribbean Museum, Waterloo. Entry is free. Check the opening hours on the day.

For forest and waterfall: Tobago interior

Main Ridge and Gilpin Trace. From Crown Point, the road climbs to the Main Ridge Forest Reserve. A licensed guide leads the Gilpin Trace for about TT$160 for a walk of roughly 1.5 hours or about TT$240 for roughly two hours. The reserve has about 210 bird species. Ask the Forestry Division or the trailhead whether an entrance fee applies.

Argyle Falls. Roxborough, on the windward coast, is about 45 minutes from Scarborough. At about 54 m, Argyle is the tallest of Tobago’s waterfalls. Pay TT$60 at the Roxborough Visitor Service Co-operative booth, which covers the guide, and tip at the end. The walk in takes 15 to 20 minutes. Tobago Cocoa Estate is also in Roxborough, but its tours run only on published dates, so plan it separately.

For a quiet village: Castara and Englishman’s Bay (Tobago)

Castara is a leeward-coast fishing village. In the morning, fishermen haul in seine nets from the beach, and on Thursday evening the village lights a bonfire. Englishman’s Bay is calm and undeveloped, with no resort strip behind it.

For a boat day: Chacachacare (from Chaguaramas)

Boats to Chacachacare leave from Chaguaramas, and there is no other way to reach it. The island held a leprosarium run by the Dominican Sisters from 1922 to 1984, so treat the visit with quiet respect and skip any party cruise. Choose an operator that arranges landing permission, and ask about the rules before you pay.

Day-trip tips

Carry TT$ cash for beach stalls, booths and small entry fees.
Agree a taxi fare before you set off, and use registered taxis in Port of Spain.
Start at first light for anything that involves traffic, such as the north coast on a weekend.
