Jamaica Day Trip Routes and Drive Times
Travel advice: the roads between Jamaica’s visitor areas can cross neighbourhoods that the UK FCDO and the US State Department (Level 2) tell tourists to avoid, especially around Kingston, Spanish Town and Montego Bay. A State of Emergency can bring curfews at short notice, and western parishes are still repairing hurricane damage. Plan drives in daylight with a hotel-booked or JTB-approved driver, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Jamaica is about 235 km long, yet the mountain roads turn short distances into long drives. The routes below are sorted by how much driving they involve, so you can see what fits before you commit. All times are approximate, and traffic can add a lot.
Short hops of about an hour or less
Montego Bay to Falmouth takes about 35 minutes. Martha Brae rafting leaves daily from 9:00 to 16:00 and takes 75 minutes on flat water. Falmouth’s Georgian centre is walkable, and the cruise port reopened on 2 December 2025, so ship days are busy. If the night is dark, Luminous Lagoon boats leave from Glistening Waters Marina in the evening.
Kingston to Port Royal is a drive by road, as the passenger ferry no longer runs. Fort Charles dates from the late 1650s, and the Giddy House, an artillery magazine from 1888, tilted in the 1907 earthquake. One guide reports admission at about US$15 for adults and US$8 for children, open 9:00 to 17:00. Be back in Kingston before dark.
Half-day hills above Kingston
Holywell, a Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust recreation area, and the coffee farms above Kingston make an easy outing, though estate opening hours vary, so phone ahead. Blue Mountain Peak (2,256 m) is another matter. The route from the Abbey Green trailhead is 18.6 km out and back and takes about 7 hours, and most walkers start after midnight to see sunrise. The visitor fee is US$20. Trail conditions after the hurricane are unconfirmed, so ask the park managers first, and pack a warm jacket and a raincoat.
Long days of two hours each way
Ocho Rios from Montego Bay is about 105 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours in each direction. Around Ocho Rios you can reach Dunn’s River Falls (about US$25 for a non-resident adult), Mystic Mountain, Green Grotto Caves and the Blue Hole, also known as Island Gully Falls. Jumps at the Blue Hole are optional, so judge the water and your own ability. Sleeping in Ocho Rios saves most of the driving.
The south coast loop appears in operators’ catalogues as a single long day from Negril or Montego Bay, pairing YS Falls, Appleton Estate and a Black River boat tour. YS Falls alone is about 1.5 to 1.75 hours each way. Black River and Appleton are both recovering from storm damage, so confirm each is running. Floyd’s Pelican Bar is a boat ride of about 10 minutes from Parottee Point in St Elizabeth. It was rebuilt after the hurricane and reported open in April 2026. Bring cash and check before you go.
Portland from Port Antonio has Rio Grande bamboo rafts, which run from Berridale or Grant’s Level to Rafters Rest in 2 to 3 hours. The rates set in September 2023 were J$12,000 for the long run and J$10,000 for the short run, per raft, and may have gone up. Pay only at the official Berridale or Rafters Rest offices. Reach Falls, about 45 minutes east of Port Antonio, opens Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 to 16:30 at US$10 for adults and US$5 for children. It has not been confirmed as reopened, so call 876-276-8663. Entry to Frenchman’s Cove was reported at about J$2,000.
Combinations to avoid
Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston cannot share a day, since the driving alone exceeds 10 hours. Kingston to Pelican Bar and Montego Bay to Port Antonio are also overnight trips.
Getting around and booking
Knutsford Express coaches serve Kingston, Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and Negril, and its branch list shows the stops. Avoid buses after dark. For families and groups, book a private transfer and agree the fare beforehand. Organised day tours are listed on Viator .
