Jamaica Guided Tours: Caves, Rum and Rivers

Travel advice: several tours below run through St Elizabeth, around Black River and the south coast, where the UK FCDO names areas to avoid and where Hurricane Melissa (October 2025) did severe damage. The US State Department rates Jamaica Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution”. Book pickups through your hotel or the operator, and read the current notices at gov.uk and travel.state.gov .

Guided attractions in Jamaica fall into a few types: wetland boats, caves, falls, a distillery and evening lagoon trips. Prices at resort-area attractions are quoted in US dollars, and many tours add hotel transfers on top. Where an operator publishes a fee, it is given here. Where only resellers publish one, treat the figure as a rough guide and confirm it.

Before you book

  • Ask whether the operator is running its full schedule. Western and south-coast attractions have been reopening in stages since the hurricane.
  • Check whether transport is included. Several entrance prices below are for entry only.
  • Wear closed shoes for the caves and falls, and bring water shoes for YS Falls.

Wetlands by boat: Black River

J. Charles Swaby’s Black River Safari has operated since November 1987. The boat tour lasts about an hour and follows Jamaica’s longest navigable river into the Lower Morass, a Ramsar-listed wetland where American crocodiles and more than 100 bird species live. It ends at a crocodile nursery. Tickets run from about US$10 to US$30 depending on age and residency, and a visiting adult should plan on about US$30. Half-day packages with pickup from Negril or Montego Bay are quoted at US$70 to US$140.

The hurricane damaged boats and the nursery. By March 2026 Swaby’s had three of its six boats back on the water, so departures may be limited. A second company, St Elizabeth Safari Crocodile Tour, runs the same river. Black River town itself is still being rebuilt. See blackriversafari.com .

Caves: Green Grotto

Chukka now operates Green Grotto Caves near Discovery Bay. The Signature Tour starts at about US$39.50 per person, with no transport included, and is a guided walk through the caves to an underground lake. Falls and rum in St Elizabeth

YS Falls, at Middle Quarters, has seven tiers and three swimming pools, and a tractor or bus carries visitors up the property. Overseas adults pay US$25 and children from 3 to 15 pay US$16. Jamaicans pay J$2,400 and J$1,500. The gates open at 9:30, last entry is at 15:00, and all guests must be out by 16:30. The park is closed on Mondays and public holidays and shuts for two weeks each September. It reopened in January 2026, and it ran a four-day week from March to June, so check the rates page for current days. Diving and jumping are banned, and lifeguards are on duty. The canopy zip line remains shut with no reopening date.

Appleton Estate, a short drive away, runs its rum tour Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 15:30, at about US$39 for entry alone. The roof and power took heavy damage, so phone 876-448-2237 to confirm tours are on.

Full-day Chukka packages

The Dunn’s River climb with a catamaran sail and snorkel is from about US$139 with transfers. The Seville “Coast to Caves” day is from about US$174 with transfers from Ocho Rios or Falmouth, and adds Green Grotto, an ATV ride, horseback riding and lunch. Both are “starting from” prices.

After dark and cultural visits

Luminous Lagoon boats leave Glistening Waters Marina in Falmouth for a trip of about 30 to 45 minutes. The glow is clearest on dark nights and much weaker under a full moon, so check the lunar calendar. Resellers quote roughly US$90 to US$185 with transfers.

The Rastafari Indigenous Village near Montego Bay is sold as a half-day visit by several operators. Opening days differ between listings, and prices show up only inside packages, from about US$112 to US$225. Confirm the day before you go, and treat it as a visit to a community.
