Family Outings in Luxembourg by Age
Children’s ages decide a Luxembourg day out more than the weather does. Entry rules change at 3, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 21, and a few activities have a hard minimum. This page groups the options by age band, with prices in euros. Getting there is the easy part: second-class trains, trams and buses cost nothing, and only first class on trains is paid.
Under 6
- Parc Merveilleux, Bettembourg. Children under 3 enter free. The park is closed for winter and reopens on 20 March 2027. It has playgrounds, mini-golf and a mini-zoo with dwarf goats, and it describes itself as the country’s only wildlife park, with nearly 200 species. Ride tokens cost EUR 1.50 each.
- Luxembourg Science Center, Differdange. Under 6s are free, though the science shows start at age 6.
- Schengen Museum. Up to age 6 is free, and the ticket includes the museum’s boat, the Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa.
- Free lifts. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift and the funicular to Kirchberg suit small children and are short rides.
Ages 6 to 12
Science Center. Ages 6 to 17 pay EUR 10 and adults EUR 17. The 45 to 60 minute science shows are included in the ticket, but seats are limited. The exploration room alone takes about three hours. From age 8, the Kitchen Lab can be added for EUR 6.50. Weekday hours are 09:00 to 17:00 and weekend hours 10:00 to 18:00.
Parc Merveilleux. A child aged 3 to 14 pays EUR 11 online for a dated ticket and EUR 13 at the gate. Adults pay EUR 15 online and EUR 17 at the gate. Bus 550 runs from Bettembourg station every 30 minutes from Monday to Saturday, and a free shuttle covers weekends.
Schengen Museum. Ages 7 to 17 pay EUR 3 and adults EUR 5. A children’s booklet helps them follow the exhibits. The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
Natur musee, Grund. Under-21s enter free and adults pay EUR 7. Everyone gets in free on Tuesdays after 17:30. It closes on Mondays.
Belval blast furnaces. Under-21s enter free, but children under 12 must be accompanied. The furnaces are shut on Tuesdays.
Butterfly Garden, Grevenmacher. Tickets are listed from EUR 10 on weekdays and EUR 11 at weekends, sold in one-hour slots. The last confirmed season ran from April to October, so check the dates on papillons.lu .
Teenagers
Echternach’s youth hostel has the Adventure Island high ropes and a 14 m indoor climbing wall with bouldering, and the lake beside it has a designated swimming zone from May to September. The Lultzhausen youth hostel rents canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards in summer. Anyone aged 5 to 17 must have an adult with them, and a deposit of EUR 100 applies. The Vianden chairlift runs from about April to October, with a return fare of EUR 5 for under-14s.
Rainy day or sunny day
Wet weather suits the Science Center, the Natur musee and the Schengen Museum. Dry weather suits Parc Merveilleux, the chairlift and the lake. Pair one of each in a single day, since the Natur musee sits in the Grund below the old town, where a riverside walk costs nothing.
Money and safety
The LuxembourgPass, from about EUR 23 for one day, covers sights only and never transport. It makes Parc Merveilleux and the Schengen Museum free and takes 30 per cent off the Science Center. Do the sums for your family size before buying.
On woodland walks in the north and east, tell children to stay on the marked path and never pick up metal objects, since old munitions still surface in that region.
