Accra Multi-Day Trips by Nights Away
The useful way to plan a trip away from Accra is by how many nights you can spare, because the roads decide what fits. Everything west toward Cape Coast funnels through the Kasoa junction, which is a regular bottleneck, and the main routes clog from about 6:30 to 10:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30. Leave early, and treat journey times as estimates. Cedi (GH₵) amounts below convert at about 11.7 to the US dollar.
One night: Cape Coast and Kakum
Cape Coast is about 145 km from Accra and the drive takes about three hours each way. Light traffic can bring that to 2 hours 15 minutes, and four hours is not unusual. A night in Cape Coast turns a rushed, exhausting day into two manageable ones, so book a room ahead.
The first day belongs to the castles. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are UNESCO World Heritage sites and memorials to the slave trade, and people go to learn and to reflect. A non-Ghanaian adult pays about GH₵80 at each, roughly US$7, and the fee is worth confirming at the gate. The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board lists Cape Coast Castle as open daily from 9:00 to 16:30 on its castle page . Give each one an unhurried visit, and keep the rest of that day quiet.
The second morning is for Kakum National Park, about 30 km north of Cape Coast. Its canopy walkway runs for 333 m, rises up to 27 m and has seven bridges, and visitors go in guided groups. Sources disagree on the total fee, so ask at the gate.
One night: Kokrobite
Kokrobite is a backpacker beach town west of Accra, about 45 to 60 minutes by car, with a surfing scene. Mr Bright’s Surf School at Big Milly’s is the named school, and its coach is described as a beach lifeguard. The beach itself has no lifeguard patrol, and neither the school’s 2026 status nor its lesson prices could be confirmed, so contact it first and check that Big Milly’s is open. Surf only at low tide, and do not treat the open sea as a place to swim for pleasure.
Two nights: the Volta
Akosombo day tours last 8 to 13 hours and include a cruise on Lake Volta, so a night nearby makes the day far less rushed. Ada Foah is about 110 km and two hours east of Accra, where the Volta River meets the Atlantic. Boats go out to Crocodile Island and through the mangrove channels.
Aqua Safari Resort is the named stay at Ada Foah. A 2024 blog listed day passes at GH₵400 for adults and GH₵200 for children, but its 2026 status is unconfirmed, so ask before you plan around it. Two days in the city itself
A city break needs no car for long distances. On day one, cover Jamestown: the lighthouse, where unofficial guides take visitors up for a tip that you should agree first, then Ussher Fort Museum and Brazil House, and finish with a look at Makola Market. Ussher Fort holds slave-trade exhibits and was a prison until 1993, so visit it quietly. Day two can take in Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park at GH₵100 for non-Ghanaian adults and the National Museum at GH₵80, then an evening in Osu. The 2-day itinerary puts timings on this plan.
What does not fit as an add-on
Tafi Atome is in the Volta Region and does not belong on a day-four extension from Accra. Lake Bosomtwe is about 250 km away. Each needs its own nights and its own planning.
Planning notes
Weekends and December fill hotels and transport quickly, and AfroFuture is listed for 28 to 30 December 2026 at El Wak Stadium, according to a secondary listing . Malaria is present all year, so use repellent at dusk and speak to a travel clinic. The Foreign Office says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are rising in Accra, so keep phones and cameras out of sight in crowds. Carry cedis in cash for tro-tros and markets.
