Gdańsk for Couples by Budget
The best romantic hours in Gdańsk cost nothing: the lamps coming on along Mariacka, and the Crane reflected in the Motława. Add a little money and the evening deepens, and a lot more buys a night by the sea in Sopot.
Free: dusk on foot
Ulica Mariacka drops from the back of St Mary’s Basilica to a Gothic gate on the river. Raised stone terraces called przedproża front the houses, carved gargoyle spouts jut over the cobbles and amber workshops keep their windows lit. Go an hour before sunset. Then follow the Długie Pobrzeże quay past the water gates, cross the footbridge to Granary Island, walk its boardwalk and return by the Green Bridge. The circuit takes about 90 minutes and costs nothing. The Royal Way, from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate, is open all night and quiet once the day-trippers have left.
Under 100 PLN for two
The Crane costs 23 PLN, or 17 PLN reduced, and is free on Wednesday from 13:00 to 17:00. The Amber Museum in the Great Mill at ul. Wielkie Młyny 16 costs 37 PLN, or 26 PLN reduced, and closes on Tuesday. Artus Court, with its tiled stove 11 metres tall, costs 26 PLN or 19 PLN. All Museum of Gdańsk branches are free on Monday, so couples on a budget can plan around it. Opening hours are on muzeumgdansk.pl and nmm.pl .
For music, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic at Ołowianka 1 occupies an 1898 red-brick power station on the island, and a Friday evening concert looks over the harbour lights. Programmes and tickets are at filharmonia.gda.pl .
A seaside afternoon is cheap too. The SKM to Sopot takes about 20 minutes and costs about 6.50 PLN each. The pier is free from 1 October; between 10 April and 30 September an adult ticket is 10 PLN, with other tiers on mosirsopot.pl . Wrap up, because the Baltic stays cold and the wind off the water bites after dark.
Splurge: a night in Sopot
The Sofitel Grand Sopot, a hotel dating from 1927, stands directly on the beach beside the pier. Compare Sopot hotels on Booking.com for dates, and pick a room facing the sea. Book a dinner table well ahead at weekends, then walk the pier before bed. If you swim in summer, check the flags: red means no swimming, rip currents form near the breakwaters, and blue-green algae can close a beach in late July and August.
For a view from the water, search Gdańsk river cruises on Viator and ask about evening departures.
Rain plan
A wet evening suits the Philharmonic or a slow hour among the amber inclusions at the Amber Museum, where insects and spiders sit trapped for 40 million years. Goldwasser, the herbal liqueur with floating gold flakes, has been a Gdańsk drink since 1598 and makes a warm nightcap in a Main Town tavern.
Staying safe after dark
Promoters on Długa and Długi Targ offer free shots or cheap beer to pull visitors into basement clubs, where inflated card charges are a known trap. Keep walking. Drinking alcohol in the street is illegal in Poland and brings a 100 PLN fine, so save the wine for a terrace table.
The verdict
A couple with one evening should take Mariacka at dusk and dinner on the quay. With a second evening, add a concert or the train to Sopot.
Before you go
Check the concert programme first, then fit the rest of the weekend around it. For more walking ideas, see the walking routes page .
