Romantic Ljubljana, Easy to Active
Romantic Ljubljana, From Easy to Active
The whole centre of Ljubljana is car-free, so couples can wander from a bridge to a table without crossing a road. Romance here comes in three paces: sit, stroll and climb. Choose your pace, or take all three over a long weekend.
Slow evenings: sit and be served
Begin on the water. The small electric wooden boat takes 50 minutes and costs about €15.82 per adult, and it passes under the Triple Bridge, Cobblers’ Bridge and Dragon Bridge as the café lights come on. See river cruise times for evening departures.
For dinner, Strelec sits in the Archers’ Tower of Ljubljana Castle and holds one Michelin star. It serves tasting menus, so reserve ahead. The castle’s ticket page covers entry to the hill. Dvorni Bar in the Old Town is a relaxed place for a glass of Slovenian wine, with grapes such as Rebula, Malvazija and Teran. On Fridays from March to October, Odprta Kuhna brings open-air chef stalls to Pogačarjev trg.
Gentle walks: the embankments
Cross Butcher’s Bridge, where couples hang padlocks and Prometheus sculptures watch the river. Follow the Cankarjevo embankment after dark, when the castle tower is lit and reflected in the water. The walking tours page has longer routes. The 10 to 15 minute woodland path up Castle Hill is free, and the Viewing Tower at the top gives a view of the roofs at sunset.
Tivoli Park’s Jakopič Promenade is a pleasant morning stroll beneath chestnut trees, with outdoor photography exhibitions along the way. The Visit Ljubljana site lists what is on during your stay.
Active mornings: hills and bikes
Šmarna Gora, at 669 m, is the locals’ favourite weekend hike on the northern edge of the city. A woodland trail leads to a hilltop church and a mountain inn, where hot tea and sweet štruklji reward the climb. Rožnik hill is the gentler option from Tivoli Park, ending at the Church of the Visitation and its inn.
For something gentler, BicikeLJ bikes make the embankments easy. Registration is €1 for seven days, and the first hour of each ride is free.
A day on Lake Bled
Bled is 55 km northwest of Ljubljana, about 45 to 55 minutes by car. A pletna rowboat to the island costs €20 per adult for the round trip, and the oarsman takes cash. Bled Castle is €19 for adults and is at blejski-grad.si . Cream cake on the hotel terraces by the lake runs about €7 to €9, against €4 to €5.50 in town bakeries. Swim only in the designated zones.
A three-night shape
Night one can be the boat and Strelec. Day two goes to Bled and ends at Dvorni Bar. Day three is Šmarna Gora in the morning and the Cankarjevo embankment at night.
Practical touches
Most of the places above are free or inexpensive, and a couple can spend very little. Carry cash on Bled’s pletna, since the oarsman takes cash only. Bring a layer for the river after dark. Keep valuables close in the busy central streets, where pickpockets operate.
Where to stay
The Old Town and the riverbank streets keep you within a few minutes of everything above. Check rates on Booking.com for rooms near the river.
The verdict
If you only have one evening, take the early boat, then the castle path while the light is warm, and finish at Dvorni Bar. Reserve Strelec early, since tasting menus suit a set evening.
