Romantic Luxor: Five Options Ranked
Luxor will not give you a long list of candlelit options, and it is better to plan around that. What it has is a short run of good ones, mostly at the river and mostly after the heat breaks. Here they are in order of how much they are worth your evening.
1. A sunset felucca
Nothing else comes close. A traditional lateen-sailed boat slips along the Nile as the sun drops behind the Theban hills, with herons and kingfishers in the reed beds. A one hour private sail costs about EGP 400 to 600 for the whole boat, which takes up to four people, so it is cheap for two. Agree the price and the duration before you step aboard. If you would like to compare boats, felucca trips on GetYourGuide are easy to compare.
2. Dinner for two on the east bank
Sofra and Al-Sahaby Lane are the names to look for, serving stuffed pigeon, lamb shank tagine and mezze. Dinner for two costs about EGP 600 to 1,200 in total. Walk there along the corniche, which is paved, free and at its best in the last light.
3. Luxor Temple under floodlights
The temple stays open into the evening, and the lit colossi and pink granite obelisk of Ramesses II look dramatic against a dark sky. Adult entry is EGP 500, paid by card at the gate. Treat it as a slow evening stroll rather than a sightseeing marathon, and then step out to the Abu Haggag Mosque and the souk.
4. A dawn balloon flight
Dawn flights drift over the west bank farmland as the cliffs turn gold. They are seasonal: flights were suspended from 1 June to 31 August 2026 for the heat and restarted gradually from September. Use a licensed operator, and expect roughly USD 40 to 100 each, usually with hotel pickup and tea. Cancellations for wind are common, so do not put this on your last morning.
5. Karnak sound and light
The evening show narrates the temple’s long construction beside the illuminated Sacred Lake. It is ticketed separately, with reseller prices around USD 42 to 77, and the schedule is on the show’s website . It suits a first evening, before the early starts begin.
When to go
October to April is comfortable. From June to August, daytime reaches 42 to 46C, which makes the early or late slots above the only workable ones. A terrace drink at the 1886 Sofitel Winter Palace is a classic stop, and the hotel can confirm current access.
Tip: book the felucca for about an hour before sunset, then walk to dinner along the Luxor corniche while the sky is still glowing. For a longer stay, the four day itinerary leaves evenings free.
