Milan Sightseeing: What to See and When
Milan’s headline sights sit inside about 1.5 km of flat, straight streets, which is the real reason this city works on foot in a way Rome and Naples do not. The Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala, the Museo del Novecento, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Castello Sforzesco are all within that box, and Santa Maria delle Grazie is a fifteen-minute walk from the cathedral. The Castello line is the one that strands people. The courtyards are open long hours and free, so a page quoting 07:45 or 09:00 is describing the gate, not the ticket desk. The museums themselves run 10:00 to 17:30, and one €5 ticket covers every collection inside, the Pietà Rondanini included. Confirm the day on the Castello site .
Duomo di Milano, and what the lift does not do
Five ticket types, from €10 for cathedral, museum and San Gottardo up to around €32 for fast-track full access, plus terraces-only at €16 on the stairs and €18 by lift and the full combination at €22 or €26. Every ticket is valid two days.
Here is the part that changes plans: the lift reaches only the first terrace level, about 50 m up. The upper walkways and the entire descent involve steps either way, so this is not a step-free rooftop, and strollers are not permitted on the terraces at all. The stairs route is somewhere around 250 steps. Modest dress, covered shoulders and knees, is enforced at the cathedral door and is a genuine reason people get turned away. Why is the Last Supper so hard to see?
Because it is not a fresco. Leonardo painted it in tempera and oil on dry plaster, an experiment that let him work slowly and rework detail, and it began deteriorating within his own lifetime. That is why the refectory is climate-controlled, why visits are capped at 15 minutes, and why only 40 people enter per slot.
The rules follow from that. €15 adult, €2 for ages 18 to 25, free under 18, and every visitor needs a reservation including the free categories. Nothing is sold at the door at any price. Collect your ticket at least 30 minutes before the slot or you forfeit it, which is how people who booked correctly still miss it. Tuesday to Sunday 08:15 to 19:00, closed Mondays. Entry-only tickets were sold out for the remainder of 2026 by 1 September. Check cenacolovinciano.org first, and if it is empty, look at guided tours with their own allocation . The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie next door, at Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie 2, is free: Solari’s Gothic nave of 1463 running into Bramante’s Renaissance apse and dome of 1492.
The two best views of the Duomo are not from the Duomo
The Museo del Novecento sits in the Palazzo dell’Arengario on Piazza del Duomo itself. €10 full, €8 reduced, €5 for 13 to 18 and for everyone on the first and third Tuesday from 14:00. Its Sala Fontana pairs Lucio Fontana’s neon with a full-height window looking straight at the cathedral façade from above, and the Thursday late opening to 22:30 turns it into an evening. The Highline Galleria, reopened on 6 February 2026, is a 250 m walkway across the Galleria’s roof at about 40 m, €12 general and €10 reduced. Different angle, different building, cheaper than the terraces.
Castello Sforzesco, dated correctly
The Visconti fortress on this site goes back to the 1360s, but the castle standing today is Francesco Sforza’s from the 1450s, rebuilt after the Ambrosian Republic tore the earlier one down. Fifteenth century is the accurate description. Inside, the Pietà Rondanini is Michelangelo’s unfinished last work, still being reworked days before his death, displayed alone in a former Spanish military hospital room.
Where the Navigli actually are
The canals run from the Darsena at Porta Ticinese, south-west of the centre. The nearest metro is Porta Genova on M2, which serves the Naviglio Grande; the Naviglio Pavese runs south from the same basin. The Naviglio Martesana is a separate canal in the north-east of the city and is nowhere near either. Along the Naviglio Grande, the Vicolo dei Lavandai preserves the covered communal washhouse with its stone washing slabs, and the church of San Cristoforo sits further down.
Free, and genuinely good
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a public passage, Mengoni’s design of 1865 to 1877, with four mosaic city crests on the floor: Turin’s bull, Rome’s wolf, Florence’s lily, Milan’s cross. The Cimitero Monumentale is free with free 20-minute Infopoint visits Tuesday to Sunday between 09:00 and 16:00, listed at monumentale.comune.milano.it . At Porta Nuova, Stefano Boeri’s Bosco Verticale towers carry roughly 900 trees and 20,000 plants; they are private homes, so this is an exterior visit.
A MilanoCard covers transport and 10 to 30 percent discounts. It does not include the Duomo, the terraces or the Last Supper, so treat it as a travel pass.
