Antwerp Walks by Day of the Week
Antwerp Walks by Day of the Week
Opening days shape a walk in Antwerp more than the weather does. The diamond quarter works only on weekdays, the cathedral is short on weekends, and the MAS is shut on Mondays. Match the route to the day and every stop is open.
Monday: the Eilandje docklands
On Mondays the MAS, with its rooftop panorama, is closed, which makes this the day to look at the docklands from the outside. The loop covers about 3.5 kilometres in two hours. Start at Falconplein, cross the former sailors’ district and the Bonapartedok, and circle the MAS tower. Continue along the Kattendijkdok marina to the Port House, Zaha Hadid’s glass-and-steel structure on top of a historic fire station.
Tuesday to Thursday: the diamond quarter
Midweek is the only sensible time for this 1.5-kilometre, 90-minute walk. Start inside the grand hall of Antwerpen-Centraal, leave by Pelikaanstraat and follow Hoveniersstraat and Schupstraat. Antwerp trades roughly 84 percent of the world’s rough diamonds, though the cutting is done mostly in India, and the district is guarded by bollards, patrols and cameras. Stay quiet and respectful, and do not photograph security staff or traders.
Many businesses in the area, including kosher bakeries, close from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening and on Jewish holidays. Provinciestraat has Kleinblatt, a bakery known since 1903 for chocolate babka.
Friday: the old centre in the morning
Take the 2.5-kilometre, two-hour walk early. Start at the Grote Markt, pass the Gothic porch into Vlaeykensgang, a whitewashed alley from 1591, then emerge onto Oude Koornmarkt and loop around the Cathedral of Our Lady and Handschoenmarkt. Finish in the printing district around Vrijdagmarkt. The cathedral costs €12 inside and is open until 17:00 on Fridays.
Saturday: Zurenborg in the afternoon
The cathedral shuts at 15:00 on Saturdays, so spend the morning in the old centre and give the afternoon to Zurenborg. This 3-kilometre, 2.5-hour route runs from Antwerpen-Berchem station along Cogels-Osylei, with turreted villas in Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles, onto Transvaalstraat and Waterloostraat, and ends at Dageraadplaats and its cafes. It is free.
Sunday: Zurenborg first, cathedral after
The cathedral opens at 13:00 on Sundays and closes at 17:00. Walk Zurenborg in the morning, ride back to the centre and go in at opening time. Sint-Annatunnel is another Sunday walk: a 572-metre stroll under the Scheldt, free and always open, reaching the left-bank parks. Trams do not cross the river until about March 2027, so the tunnel and the free ferry are the way across.
Practical notes
Wear flat shoes for the cobbles, and keep valuables zipped around Centraal station, De Keyserlei and the Meir. A De Lijn day ticket is €9 if your feet give up; see delijn.be . For official maps and events, use visit.antwerpen.be .
Guided options exist as well: find walking tours on GetYourGuide . If you want a wider context for the old centre, see the sightseeing page .
Tip: do the diamond walk on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning and leave Friday afternoon for Zurenborg.
