Romantic Antwerp Through the Seasons
Romantic Antwerp Through the Seasons
Antwerp romance follows the light. In June the sun sets late and the rooftops stay open past midnight; in December the lamps come on before five and the old alleys do the work. Plan the same city differently depending on when you arrive.
Spring: Art Nouveau on foot
Walk Cogels-Osylei in Zurenborg together. The street holds some 170 protected facades from 1894 to 1906, including the gold-mosaic Four Seasons houses and the White Palaces. It costs nothing, and it ends at Dageraadplaats, where cafes spill onto the square. On a Saturday afternoon, continue to Kloosterstraat, the antiques street linking the old centre to Het Zuid, and browse vintage furniture before coffee.
Summer: rooftops and the river
From 1 April to 31 October the free MAS rooftop panorama stays open until midnight (last access 23:30), Tuesday to Sunday. Go up for sunset and watch the port lights come on. Before that, board the free Sint-Anna ferry at Het Steen: it sails every 15 minutes by day, and from the open deck the Gothic cathedral spire and the MAS tower share one view. The left-bank promenade and its riverside cafes make a quiet stop before you return.
For a drink, the terraces along the Willemdok marina on the Eilandje are the classic choice.
Autumn: art and candlelight
As the evenings shorten, go indoors for something slow. KMSKA stays open until 22:00 on Thursdays, with tickets at €20 for adults (€10 for under-26s) and a free timed slot to reserve at kmska.be . By day the cathedral is €12 and holds Rubens’ Descent from the Cross; hours are shorter on weekends, with Saturday ending at 15:00 and Sunday opening at 13:00.
Vlaeykensgang, the cobbled alley dating from 1591, is at its best by lantern light. A few restaurants and taverns sit in and around it, so look at current menus and book a table before you go.
Winter: long evenings
The MAS rooftop closes at 22:00 in winter, still enough time for a cold clear evening above the city. The Sint-Annatunnel, free and open all night, lets you walk under the Scheldt on 1933 wooden escalators, an unusual short walk after dinner. The cathedral has set closure dates in November and December, so check dekathedraal.be .
Practical details
Trams do not cross the river until about March 2027, so use the tunnel or ferry to reach the left bank. Keep your valuables close around Centraal station, De Keyserlei and the Meir.
For a room near the old centre, check rates on Booking.com . Visitor details sit at visit.antwerpen.be , and a walking routes page shows the streets between these stops.
Tip: in any season, cross on the ferry in the hour after sunset, then eat late in the old centre.
