Klaipeda on Foot From Old Town to Dunes

Klaipėda gives walkers four distinct options, from a flat city loop to trails on the Curonian Spit. Each walk below lists where to start, what to see and what it costs in euros.

Walk 1: Old Town and river

Start: Theatre Square. Cost: free, plus museum tickets if you go in.

The loop begins at the Ännchen von Tharau fountain beside the Drama Theatre. The fountain dates from 1912, and its figure was rebuilt around 1990. From there, the Old Town’s 17th-century grid of lanes lets you look at half-timbered and brick buildings at street level, and small bronze sculptures are set into the streets. Head for the Danė and the moored barque Meridianas, a Finnish-built vessel from 1948. Near the Castle Bridge you will find the minehunter Sūduvis, open for visits at EUR 6. The loop ends at the castle bastions at Priešpilio g. 2, where the Castle Museum charges EUR 6. The Sculpture Park costs nothing. The Clock and Watch Museum (Liepų g. 12, EUR 5) lies on a short side route.

Walk 2: Smiltynė shore

Start: Old Ferry Terminal, E. Galvanausko bul. 1. Cost: EUR 1.70 return.

The ferry crossing takes about 5 to 7 minutes. After landing, you can turn along the shore or head into the pine forest on paved paths towards the beach. A walk of about 1.6 km leads to the Lithuanian Sea Museum at Smiltynės g. 3. Plan the day around the return ferry, since the return ticket is already in your hand. Walk 3: Spit trails by bus

Start: Smiltynė bus stop. Cost: EUR 8.00 per person for the Nida bus.

The bus runs about every two hours. Get off at Juodkrantė for the free Hill of Witches, a forest path with about 80 wood sculptures. Further south, at km 32 of the main road, the Nagliai Dead Dunes trail is about 1 km long, half reinforced surface and half sand. The 2026 season ran 17 April to 18 October, and adults pay EUR 5 by card. Always stay on the marked trail. In Nida, the Parnidis Dune has wooden stairs and paths, and the sand faces are off limits for climbing or sliding. The Russian border lies a few kilometres south of Nida, so walkers should check their government’s travel advice before they go and should not head towards it.

Walk 4: Coastal path to the cliff

Start: Giruliai. Cost: free.

Dutchman’s Cap is a coastal cliff of about 24 m in Seaside Regional Park, roughly 2 km north of Giruliai. The walk follows the park’s paths along the Baltic coast.

Practical tips

  • Cobblestones are uneven, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • Wet boulders at the Northern Pier are slippery, and swimming near the pier or the harbour breakwater is unsafe.
  • Winter hours cut several museums to a few days a week, so confirm times first.
