Odense rewards walking. The old town is small, flat and mostly pedestrianised, and its best-known theme, the life of Hans Christian Andersen, ties neatly into a route on foot. A typical Andersen walk runs about 2 to 3 miles over partly cobbled streets. Any prices are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro.
The Hans Christian Andersen trail
The signature route is “In the Footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen.” It links his birthplace, the spot where his mother worked as a laundress, the cathedral (Skt. Knuds Kirke) where he was confirmed, and the site of the old theatre. On the way you pass the underground H.C. Andersens Hus and the small yellow Childhood Home on Munkemollestraede. An old-town loop
Beyond the Andersen sites, a general old-town circuit takes in the cobbled Latin Quarter, the pedestrian shopping streets, Brandts art museum in its converted 1869 textile factory, and the TID city museum among old courtyards. It is compact enough to string together in an easy morning.
Down to the river
For a greener stretch, drop to the Odense River. The Fairytale Garden (Eventyrhaven) and Munke Mose park run along the water as free, central green space, and the riverside path carries on out of the centre if you want a longer, flat walk toward the forest.
Guided or self-guided
You can do all of this on your own, or take a guided walk. Private guided routes are bookable through operators such as ToursByLocals, GetYourGuide, Musement and GuideService.dk, some running a full day and including the new museum. Free, tip-based city walks are advertised too, but they come and go, so confirm the operator and schedule near your dates (verify).
Practical tips
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and bring a light waterproof, as the weather changes fast. Spring and early autumn give the most comfortable conditions. The old town is a few minutes on foot from the train station, so no transport is needed to start.
