Coast and Town Walks from St Helier

This page ranks the walks around St Helier from gentle to tough, and ends with the ones where the tide sets the rules. The island’s buses all run from Liberation Station on the Esplanade, and libertybus.je lists times and fares. Spring tides rise and fall over 10 m here, which is why shore routes need checking.

Easy: the town trail, about 2 hours

The trail starts at Liberation Square and follows the story of the Occupation and the older town in seven stops.

Moderate: the Railway Walk

A gentle crushed-stone path follows the course of the Jersey Railway, which closed in 1936, between St Aubin and La Corbiere. It is traffic-free and about 4 miles or 6.5 km one way. Ride route 12 or 15 to St Aubin Pier, about 15 minutes, set off through wooded valleys, pines and heathland, and catch route 12 or 12A home from Corbiere.

Demanding: the north coast cliffs

Cliffs of 200 to 300 feet line the path between Bonne Nuit Bay and Devil’s Hole or Greve de Lecq. Steep granite steps and sharp gradients make this the hardest option, and good footwear matters. This path belongs to the coastal network of the National Trust for Jersey . Find the right bus on libertybus.je.

Tide-timed: two causeways

Elizabeth Castle’s paved causeway, about 1.1 km from Westpark Slip, can be crossed only at low tide. Allow at least 15 minutes each way, check the calculator on ports.je and ring the kiosk on 01534 634048 if unsure. Do not set off once the water has started to cover it. If you are stranded, take the castle ferry or call 999 for the Coastguard.

At La Corbiere, a causeway of about 300 m leads to the lighthouse, a walk of about 10 minutes, and a siren warns of the returning sea. Walk back at once if it sounds.
