Before you go: the safety reality. Real hiking trails exist in and around Johannesburg, but the same rules apply as everywhere else in the city: go in groups, hike during daylight, stick to marked trails, and prefer the guided options where they exist. Use Uber or Bolt to reach trailheads rather than walking there through unfamiliar streets. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Johannesburg isn’t the first city that comes to mind for hiking, but these 4 areas offer genuine trails without needing to leave the region.
1. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve
The metro’s largest reserve at over 700 hectares, 11km south of the CBD, free to enter and open sunrise to sunset. Trails cross grassland and rocky terrain with zebra and wildebeest sightings possible; hike in a group, during the day, on the marked routes.
2. Melville Koppies
A heritage and geology site with rock roughly 3 billion years old. The Friends of Melville Koppies guided Sunday walks are the established, safe way to hike here rather than going alone. Search guided Johannesburg hiking tours if you want to book ahead of a Sunday slot.
Is it safe to hike alone in Johannesburg?
No, not recommended anywhere on this list. Go in a group, during daylight, on marked trails, and choose the guided option where one exists, especially at Melville Koppies. Klipriviersberg and Walter Sisulu are more manageable in a self-organized group; the Magaliesberg, being further out and more remote, rewards a guided day trip more than the closer-in options do.
3. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
In Roodepoort, trails wind past the roughly 70m Witpoortjie Falls, with a resident pair of Verreaux’s eagles adding a genuine wildlife draw. Open 8am-5pm daily, an easier, more managed hike than the others on this list.
4. The Magaliesberg
About an hour from the city, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2015, not a World Heritage Site) on rock roughly 2.3 billion years old, with real rock-climbing and longer trails than anything closer to the CBD. Search Magaliesberg day tours rather than self-driving out if you’re not confident on South African roads.
The 4 areas at a glance
| Area | Distance | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Klipriviersberg | 11km south of CBD | Free, daytime, groups |
| Melville Koppies | In-city | Guided Sunday walks |
| Walter Sisulu NBG | Roodepoort | Daily, 8am-5pm |
| Magaliesberg | ~1 hour | Guided day trip recommended |
For the broader green-space list these trails sit within, see Johannesburg nature spots ; for the full trip plan, see the Johannesburg travel guide .
One concrete tip: save the Magaliesberg for a full day trip rather than trying to combine it with a city-day plan; the drive alone makes it its own outing.
