These 6 events are worth checking against your dates before you book, some fill Old Town’s hotels fast, and one shifts every year.
1. Phuket Vegetarian Festival
The island’s biggest event, tied to the 9th lunar month (2026: Oct 10 to 18), brings firewalking, face-piercing street processions, and Old Town filled with all-vegetarian food stalls. It’s part of the same Baba/Peranakan food culture that earned Phuket UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status in 2015. Dates are lunar, so confirm the current year before you plan around it.
2. Songkran
Thailand’s water-festival New Year runs Apr 13 to 15. Patong and Bangla Road go all in on it, expect to get soaked the moment you step outside.
3. Loy Krathong
On the full moon of November (2026: Nov 25), people float small decorated krathongs on water to mark the festival of lights.
4. Chinese New Year
Old Town’s Sino-Portuguese streets, built on old tin-mining wealth from Chinese immigrants, lean into the January or February celebration harder than most of the island.
5. Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
A December sailing event (2026: Dec 5 to 12) that fills the island’s coastline with race fleets and draws sailors from around the world.
6. Laguna Phuket Marathon
A June race through the Laguna resort complex on Bang Tao’s stretch of coast, for runners who want a beach backdrop to the course.
One correction worth making plainly: the Yi Peng lantern release is a Chiang Mai and northern-Thailand tradition. It does not happen in Phuket, no matter what a tour listing might claim.
