2 Days in Auckland and Beyond, NZ

Two days isn’t enough to see New Zealand, but it’s enough to see Auckland’s CBD properly and still get one real day trip in. Day 1 covers the city; Day 2 leaves it entirely for Hobbiton, the most efficient big-ticket trip you can do from Auckland in a single day. Book these before you go

  • Hobbiton day tour (departs Auckland, sells out on summer weekends)
  • Your CBD hotel, especially December-February
  • Airport transfer or SkyDrive bus, so Day 1 starts on time

Day 1: Auckland CBD

Morning

Start at Mt Eden/Maungawhau, Auckland’s highest volcanic cone. It’s free, and the summit’s been closed to cars since 2016, so it’s a flat 10-minute walk from the car park to a 360-degree view of the city and the Hauraki Gulf. If you’d rather trade the walk for a lift and a coffee shop at the top, take the Sky Tower instead (adult $47, covers all three decks) - just don’t expect the “tallest in the Southern Hemisphere” claim to hold anymore; Jakarta’s Autograph Tower overtook it in 2022, though it’s still the tallest thing in NZ by a wide margin.

Afternoon

Walk down to Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter - free to wander, marina views, Silo Park, and a free tidal pool at Karanga Plaza if it’s warm enough. Grab lunch at the Auckland Fish Market in Wynyard, a one-stop seafood sampler that’s an easy first-timer intro to NZ seafood. Cross the pedestrian Te Wero/Wynyard Crossing bridge for the best photo of the superyacht marina.

Evening

Dinner in the Britomart precinct (the shopping/dining district above what used to be Britomart Station - it was renamed Waitematā Station in September 2025, so don’t be confused if a map calls it that now). Check CBD hotel rates on Booking.com if you haven’t booked yet; expect $220-350 for a decent 4-star.

Day 2: Hobbiton day trip

All day

Hobbiton (near Matamata) is about 165km and 2-2.5 hours each way, and it’s a guided-only site - you can’t just drive up and wander in. Book a Hobbiton day tour that includes return transport from Auckland; most run 10-12 hours door to door with 2 hours on set walking the film locations, a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and time in the Party Tree field. Private transfers for groups of 4-6 run roughly $400-600, worth it if you’re travelling with others and want to skip the shared coach.

Evening

You’ll get back to Auckland late - keep dinner simple near your hotel. If you’ve got energy left, Karangahape Road (K’Road) has bars and live music running later than most of the CBD.

Getting around

You don’t need a car for Day 1 - everything is walkable or a short bus ride, and an AT HOP card covers buses, trains, and the Devonport ferry under a $50/7-day cap; check current fares at the AT journey planner . Day 2 is handled by your Hobbiton tour operator, so there’s no need to rent anything for this trip.

One honest tip

Two days really is a taster, not a trip. If Hobbiton hooks you on New Zealand outside Auckland, the 3-day itinerary adds Waiheke Island, and anything 5 days or longer gets you to Rotorua too.
