3 Days in Auckland and Beyond, NZ

Three days gives you a real Auckland-as-base trip in miniature: one day in the city, one day off on a guided Hobbiton tour, and one day on Waiheke Island’s wineries and beaches. It’s tighter than the 5-day plan , which adds a Rotorua overnight, but it’s an honest, well-paced first taste of what Auckland gives you access to. If two days is really all you have, see the 2-day version instead.
Book these before you go
- Hobbiton day tour (guided-only site, sells out summer weekends)
- Waiheke ferry, and a wine tour shuttle if you want the vineyards
- CBD hotel, especially December-February
Day 1: Auckland CBD
Morning
Walk Mt Eden/Maungawhau for a free 360-degree view (summit’s walk-only since 2016, ~10 minutes from the car park), then head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum (international adult $32; the Māori and Pacific galleries are closed since May 2025 for asbestos remediation, but the twice-daily cultural performance still runs).
Afternoon
Lunch in the Auckland Domain grounds around the museum, then walk or bus to Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter for the marina, Silo Park, and a free tidal pool if the weather cooperates.
Evening
Dinner in the Britomart precinct. Compare CBD hotels on Booking.com - expect $220-350 for a solid 4-star, more in peak summer.
Day 2: Hobbiton day trip
Hobbiton (Matamata) is ~165km and 2-2.5 hours each way, and guided-only. Book a Hobbiton tour with return transport from Auckland - most run 10-12 hours door to door, with time to walk the film set, stop at the Green Dragon Inn, and take photos at the Party Tree. You’ll be back in Auckland late; keep dinner near your hotel.
Day 3: Waiheke Island
Morning
Catch the Fullers360 ferry from downtown (~40 min, not on AT HOP - book directly at fullers.co.nz ). Waiheke’s vineyards aren’t walkable from the ferry terminal, so pre-book a wine tour shuttle or hire a scooter/car on the island for the day.
Afternoon
Visit 2-3 wineries (30+ on the island), then have a late lunch at one with a restaurant on-site. If wine isn’t the draw, swap in Onetangi or Palm Beach for a swim instead.
Evening
Last ferries back run into the evening but get earlier off-peak - check the timetable before you commit to a late dinner on the island. Back in Auckland, a quiet dinner near your hotel closes out the trip.
Getting around
CBD/Viaduct is walkable; AT HOP covers buses and trains under a $50/7-day cap. Waiheke’s ferry and wine tour are separate bookings from the city transport system, and Day 2’s Hobbiton transport is handled by your tour operator, so you don’t need a rental car for this particular 3 days.
One honest tip
Don’t try to add a fourth activity to Day 3 after Waiheke - the ferry schedule and wine-tour timing eat more of the day than they look like on paper. If you want more breathing room and a Rotorua overnight, the 5-day itinerary is the next step up.
