2 Days in Helsinki: The Day Trip Itinerary
Two days buys exactly one real day trip alongside Suomenlinna: settle in and ferry out to the fortress islands on day one, then hand the whole second day to Porvoo’s painted-wooden old town, a 45-50 minute bus from Kamppi. Day 1: Arrival and Suomenlinna
Land at HEL and take the Ring Rail Line into the center (the P line runs about 28 minutes, the I line about 33, both on an ABC ticket around EUR 4.40 via app or EUR 4.80 contactless). Check into a hotel near Kamppi or Kruununhaka, then walk Senate Square and the Helsinki Cathedral before lunch at the Old Market Hall, where the lohikeitto, a dill-flecked salmon soup, is the one to order. In the afternoon, catch the HSL ferry from Market Square out to Suomenlinna, about 15 minutes on the same AB ticket you’d use on any tram. The fortress island is free to roam; budget an hour or two for the ramparts and the Suomenlinna Museum (about EUR 10) if you want the history. Ferry back for dinner in the city core.
Do you need a special ticket for the Suomenlinna ferry?
No. The Suomenlinna ferry runs as part of HSL’s regular network, so the same AB single you’d buy for a tram or bus, about EUR 3.30 via app or EUR 3.50 contactless, covers the 15-minute crossing from Market Square. Ignore any tour operator charging a premium for what’s really a public ferry; the island itself costs nothing to enter.
Day 2: Porvoo’s old town
Head to the Kamppi bus terminal for the 45-50 minute regional bus to Porvoo, Finland’s second-oldest town, running roughly EUR 10-13 one way (an advance OnniBus fare runs less). Spend the day wandering the painted-wooden riverside old town, ducking into the Porvoo Cathedral, and having lunch at a cafe along the Porvoonjoki river. It’s the single most photogenic thing on this itinerary and the easiest trip to pull off in any weather, since Nuuksio needs decent conditions and the archipelago only runs a summer ferry season. Bus back to Helsinki for the evening.
Is 2 days enough to see Helsinki properly?
For the day trips this itinerary is built around, yes, if you accept trading the city’s own sights for it.
