5 Days in Helsinki: The Day Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Suomenlinna

Land at HEL and take the Ring Rail Line into the center, the P line in about 28 minutes or the I line in about 33, both on an ABC ticket around EUR 4.40 via app or EUR 4.80 contactless. Settle into a hotel near Kamppi or Kruununhaka, walk Senate Square and the Helsinki Cathedral, then lunch at the Old Market Hall (order the lohikeitto). In the afternoon, take the HSL ferry from Market Square out to Suomenlinna, about 15 minutes on a normal AB ticket. The fortress island is free to roam, with the Suomenlinna Museum around EUR 10 if you want the history.

Day 2: Porvoo’s old town

Ride the hourly regional bus from Kamppi to Porvoo, 45-50 minutes for roughly EUR 10-13 one way. Spend the day in the painted-wooden riverside old town, the Porvoo Cathedral, and a riverside lunch, the easiest and most weather-proof day trip on this list.

Day 3: Nuuksio National Park

Take the commuter train to Espoo Centre, about 25 minutes, then bus 245 onward into Nuuksio National Park, another 25 minutes or so, both on ordinary HSL fares. Hike granite ridges and lakeside trails for the closest genuine wilderness to the city.

Day 4: The archipelago beyond Suomenlinna

From Market Square’s Kolera basin, take the JT-Line ferry, not an HSL ticket, out to Vallisaari, about a 20-minute crossing, adult return around EUR 9.80, running roughly late May through mid-September. Spend the day on Vallisaari’s old munitions-island trails, hopping to Lonna for a second island with its own small sauna and cafe scene.

Is a Tallinn ferry day worth adding to a Helsinki trip?

Yes, once you’re past four days in Helsinki proper; the crossing alone eats 4-4.5 hours round trip, which competes hard with the shorter trips on a tighter schedule. At five-plus days, though, it’s genuinely worth it: a different country, a different old town, and a different language, all inside a single day trip.

Day 5: Tallinn, Estonia by ferry

Catch an early Eckero Line ferry, the cheapest operator, from about EUR 22 one way, for the roughly 2 hour 15 minute crossing to Tallinn. Spend the day in Tallinn’s old town before the return crossing in the evening. Book your sailing time ahead in summer; weekend crossings fill up first, and a later booking usually means a pricier or less convenient departure.

Do you need a passport for the Tallinn ferry?

You need valid ID to board, checked against your booking at the terminal, but Finland and Estonia are both Schengen members, so there’s no immigration checkpoint or passport stamp at either port. Non-EU travelers should still carry an actual passport rather than a national ID card, since ferry check-in staff sometimes ask for it specifically.
