4 Days in Johannesburg: First Plan

Before you go: the safety reality. Johannesburg has genuinely high rates of armed robbery, carjacking, and smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights. Use Uber or Bolt rather than walking, especially downtown or after dark; take the Gautrain for the OR Tambo-Sandton-Pretoria run; keep car doors locked and stay alert at intersections; don’t display phones or valuables; use ATMs inside malls or banks rather than on the street; and see Soweto on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton and the Gautrain corridor are the calmer side of the city. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you book.

Four days builds on the 3-day plan (Apartheid Museum, guided Soweto, the Cradle of Humankind) with a fourth day in Pretoria, South Africa’s executive capital, an easy hour out on the Gautrain. With more time, the 5-day plan adds a Pilanesberg safari.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill

Morning

The Apartheid Museum (2.5-3 hours; roughly ZAR 85-120, verify).

Afternoon

Constitution Hill, the former Old Fort prison complex, now home to the Constitutional Court.

Evening

Dinner in Maboneng; Uber back to Sandton.

Day 2: Guided Soweto

Morning

Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, marking the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Handle this stop soberly.

Afternoon

Regina Mundi church and Kliptown’s Walter Sisulu Square, the 1955 Freedom Charter site.

Evening

Return to Sandton; an early night ahead of tomorrow’s day trip.

Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind

Morning

About 40-50km northwest, the Sterkfontein Caves, one of the world’s richest hominin fossil sites. Verify current reopening status after 2024 flooding.

Afternoon

The Maropeng Visitor Centre; combo ticket roughly ZAR 175 (verify), tours hourly Tuesday-Sunday, 9am-4pm.

Evening

Return to Johannesburg for dinner in Sandton or Rosebank.

Day 4: Pretoria (Tshwane)

Morning

About an hour north via the Gautrain (Park to Pretoria station), visit the Union Buildings and the Nelson Mandela statue outside them.

Afternoon

The Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park round out Pretoria’s history side. If you’re visiting in October, the city’s jacarandas are in bloom, earning it the “Jacaranda City” nickname.

Evening

Return to Johannesburg by Gautrain for a final dinner.

Getting around and where to stay

Sandton remains the best base across all four days, with direct Gautrain access to OR Tambo, Pretoria, and Rosebank. Uber or Bolt covers Maboneng and Constitution Hill; the Cradle of Humankind needs a tour or rental car rather than the rail line.

One concrete tip: put Pretoria on day four rather than day one. Doing Johannesburg’s heavier history days first, while you’re freshest, makes the lighter Pretoria day trip a good way to close out the trip.
