2 Days in Kyoto: Kansai Gateway Itinerary
This 2-day plan uses Kyoto purely as a sleeping base: Nara’s deer park and Todai-ji on day one, Osaka’s neon and castle on day two, both round trips under an hour by train. Want a third gateway city? Day 1: Nara
- Catch the JR Nara Line’s Miyakoji Rapid from Kyoto Station, about 45 minutes for ¥720 one way. The Kintetsu Limited Express is quicker at roughly 35 minutes for about ¥1,280 and lands 5 minutes from the deer park, worth the upgrade if you are only doing a half day
- Be walking into Todai-ji by 9am. The Great Buddha Hall now runs ¥800 for adults, or ¥1,200 combined with the on-site museum, and the crowds are noticeably thinner before 10am
- Spend an hour in Nara Park afterward, free entry, home to over 1,000 wild deer that genuinely bow for a ¥150 pack of shika senbei. They are wild animals, not pets, so keep crackers visible and don’t tease them once you’re out
- Grab lunch near Kintetsu-Nara Station before heading back to Kyoto by mid-afternoon, or linger for Kasuga Taisha’s lantern paths if the deer and Todai-ji didn’t fill the day
Day 2: Osaka
- JR’s Special Rapid gets you from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station or Umeda in 28-30 minutes for ¥580, the cheapest, fastest trip on this whole list
- Ride Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line from Umeda down to Namba for Dotonbori, the neon canal-front strip built for takoyaki and okonomiyaki grazing, best experienced after dark when the signs light up
- Fit in Osaka Castle in the morning or early afternoon before the Dotonbori crawl, and the Umeda Sky Building observation deck if you want a skyline view to bookend the day
- Last train back to Kyoto runs until roughly 11-11:30pm on the JR line, plenty of room for a full evening before heading home
Is 2 days enough to get a real taste of Kansai beyond Kyoto?
It’s enough for the two biggest, easiest gateway trips, not the full region. Nara and Osaka alone justify basing yourself in Kyoto rather than staying in either city outright, since both round trips run under an hour. Uji, Himeji, and Kobe all wait for a longer version of this itinerary.
Carry an ICOCA or Suica IC card for every leg above, tap and go on JR, Kintetsu, and the Osaka Metro alike, and keep a few thousand yen in cash since Nara’s smaller food stalls and some Todai-ji ticket windows don’t take cards.
