3 Days in Kyoto: Kansai Gateway Itinerary
This 3-day plan runs the same Nara-then-Osaka spine as the 2-day version , then adds Uji, Japan’s matcha capital and the shortest train ride of the three. Day 1: Nara
- Take the JR Nara Line’s Miyakoji Rapid, about 45 minutes for ¥720, or the faster Kintetsu Limited Express at roughly 35 minutes for about ¥1,280, landing 5 minutes from the deer park
- Arrive at Todai-ji by 9am, ¥800 adult for the Great Buddha Hall or ¥1,200 combined with the museum, before the day’s tour buses fill the approach
- Walk Nara Park, free entry, over 1,000 wild deer that bow for a ¥150 pack of shika senbei crackers. Keep crackers visible, and expect a nip or a butt once they run out, these are wild animals, not props
- Return to Kyoto by mid-afternoon, or add Kasuga Taisha’s lantern-lined paths if you want a fuller day
Day 2: Osaka
- JR’s Special Rapid runs Kyoto Station to Osaka Station or Umeda in 28-30 minutes for ¥580, the fastest and cheapest hop of the trip
- Continue on Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line to Namba for Dotonbori, the canal-front strip of takoyaki and okonomiyaki stalls, best after dark under the neon
- Work in Osaka Castle earlier in the day, and the Umeda Sky Building observation deck if you want a skyline view before dinner
- Last JR trains back to Kyoto run until roughly 11-11:30pm
Is Uji worth a dedicated day, or can it be a half day?
Uji is genuinely a half-day trip, the shortest ride of the three gateway cities here, so pair a late morning arrival with an early afternoon return if your schedule is tight. The one exception is timing around Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall interior viewing, which sells out by midday on weekends and during sakura season with no way to book ahead.
Day 3: Uji
- The JR Nara Line covers Kyoto Station to Uji in about 20-22 minutes for roughly ¥240, the shortest ride on this whole itinerary
- Byodo-in , the temple on the ¥10 coin, charges ¥700 general admission for the garden and Hoshokan Museum, plus ¥300 for a short guided look inside the Phoenix Hall itself, departing every 20 minutes on a first-come basis
- Spend the afternoon at a matcha tea house near the temple, ¥550-850 per serving, since Uji is Japan’s premier matcha-growing region and the tasting is the actual point of the trip, not an add-on
- Return to Kyoto Station by early evening for a last dinner in the city
Load an ICOCA or Suica card before day one and you will not touch a ticket machine again until the airport. Carry cash regardless, Todai-ji’s ticket windows and Uji’s smaller tea houses do not all take cards.
