7 Days in Kyoto: Kansai Gateway Itinerary

This is the full run: all six Kansai gateway trips from the 6-day itinerary , Nara through Kobe, plus a 7th flex day to go back to whichever city you liked best before flying out. Shorter trip? Every version from 2 days up nests inside this same order.

Day 1: Nara

  • JR Nara Line’s Miyakoji Rapid, about 45 minutes for ¥720, or Kintetsu Limited Express at roughly 35 minutes for about ¥1,280
  • Todai-ji by 9am, ¥800 adult for the Great Buddha Hall or ¥1,200 combined with the museum
  • Nara Park, free, over 1,000 wild deer bowing for ¥150 shika senbei crackers, wild animals that nip once crackers run out
  • Back to Kyoto by mid-afternoon, or add Kasuga Taisha with time to spare

Day 2: Osaka

  • JR Special Rapid, 28-30 minutes for ¥580
  • Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line to Namba for Dotonbori, best after dark under the neon
  • Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building deck around the crawl
  • Last JR trains back run until roughly 11-11:30pm

Day 3: Uji

  • JR Nara Line, about 20-22 minutes for roughly ¥240
  • Byodo-in , ¥700 for the garden and museum, plus ¥300 for a short guided look inside the Phoenix Hall, first-come, every 20 minutes
  • A matcha tasting near the temple, ¥550-850 per serving
  • Back to Kyoto Station by early evening

Day 4: Himeji Castle

  • Shinkansen, about 55 minutes for roughly ¥4,740, or JR Special Rapid at 90-95 minutes for ¥2,210 with no surcharge
  • Himeji Castle charges non-residents ¥2,500 for adults since March 2026, up from ¥1,000, under-18s still free
  • Give the keep 2-3 hours, no air conditioning or elevators inside, exactly as it was built
  • Back to Kyoto by evening

Day 5: Mount Hiei and Enryaku-ji

  • Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi to Yase-Hieizanguchi, ¥280, then a connecting cable car, or via Sakamoto, about 30 minutes for ¥460, then a cable car for roughly ¥1,570 round trip
  • Enryaku-ji , founded 788 CE, roughly ¥1,000 admission across all three precincts
  • Walk the To-do precinct first, the oldest and most complete section
  • Return via the same route you rode up, last cable cars typically run mid-to-late afternoon

Day 6: Kobe

  • Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Kobe, about 30 minutes for roughly ¥2,870 one way non-reserved
  • Lunch on Kobe beef, the city’s signature dish
  • Walk the port area, then the Kitano district’s Western-style houses
  • Early evening train back to Kyoto for dinner

What’s the best way to spend a flex day after six gateway trips?

Go back to whichever city clicked, rather than forcing a seventh new destination into a trip that has already covered the region. A repeat Nara morning without the crowds, an extra Uji tea house, or Osaka’s Umeda Sky Building at sunset all work better than a rushed new stop with a plane to catch.

Day 7: Flex day and departure

  • Pick one repeat: Nara at dawn for near-empty Todai-ji grounds before 8am, a second Uji tea salon sitting, or an Osaka evening you didn’t have time for the first pass
  • Keep the afternoon light, this is the day you pack and confirm the flight, not the day to cram in a new gateway city
  • Head to Kyoto Station for the JR Haruka Limited Express to Kansai International Airport (KIX), about 75-80 minutes for ¥3,060 one way unreserved, with departures roughly every 30 minutes through the evening
  • Build in a buffer before the flight. Haruka runs reliably, but a missed connection with checked bags and an international departure is not the risk to take on your last day

Keep the ICOCA or Suica card loaded until the airport, it taps straight through the Haruka gates too. Carry the last of your yen for one final konbini coffee before security.
