4 Days in Kyoto: Kansai Gateway Itinerary
This 4-day plan keeps the 3-day itinerary’s Nara, Osaka, and Uji days intact, then adds Himeji Castle, the furthest and most expensive gateway trip on this list since its March 2026 price hike. Day 1: Nara
- JR Nara Line’s Miyakoji Rapid, about 45 minutes for ¥720, or Kintetsu Limited Express at roughly 35 minutes for about ¥1,280, 5 minutes from the deer park on arrival
- Todai-ji by 9am, ¥800 adult for the Great Buddha Hall or ¥1,200 combined with the museum
- Nara Park, free, over 1,000 wild deer that bow for a ¥150 pack of shika senbei, wild animals rather than pets, so expect a nip once the crackers run out
- Back to Kyoto by mid-afternoon, or add Kasuga Taisha if the day has room
Day 2: Osaka
- JR Special Rapid, Kyoto Station to Osaka Station or Umeda, 28-30 minutes for ¥580
- Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line onward to Namba for Dotonbori, the canal-front takoyaki and okonomiyaki strip, best after dark
- Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building observation deck fit around the Dotonbori crawl
- Last JR trains back to Kyoto run until roughly 11-11:30pm
Day 3: Uji
- JR Nara Line, about 20-22 minutes for roughly ¥240, the shortest ride of the trip
- Byodo-in , ¥700 for the garden and Hoshokan Museum, plus ¥300 for a short guided look inside the Phoenix Hall, first-come, every 20 minutes
- A matcha tasting near the temple, ¥550-850 per serving, since Uji is Japan’s premier matcha-growing region
- Back to Kyoto Station by early evening
Should Himeji Castle be a dedicated day, or paired with Osaka?
Pairing works better for most trips: Himeji sits on the same JR corridor as Osaka, so splitting the rail cost across both destinations beats one long dedicated round trip from Kyoto. This 4-day plan gives Himeji its own full day anyway, since you have already covered Osaka on day 2 and a rushed combined day shortchanges both.
Day 4: Himeji Castle
- Shinkansen from Kyoto to Himeji, about 55 minutes for roughly ¥4,740 one way, or JR Special Rapid at 90-95 minutes for ¥2,210 with no surcharge if you would rather save the yen
- Himeji Castle now charges non-residents ¥2,500 for adults since March 2026, up from ¥1,000, though anyone under 18 still enters free
- Give the keep itself 2-3 hours: six stories of original white plaster construction with zero air conditioning or elevators inside, exactly as it was built
- Head straight back to Kyoto by evening, or extend the return through Osaka if you want a second look at Dotonbori at night
Carry an ICOCA or Suica card loaded before day one, and keep cash on hand regardless. Todai-ji’s ticket windows, Uji’s smaller tea houses, and some Himeji food stalls near the station still do not take cards.
