5 Days in Mandalay: First-Timer Plan
Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and many sites were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Before you plan a single day. Myanmar has been under military rule since the 2021 coup, with an ongoing civil war, and most governments currently advise against travel; check your own government’s current guidance before booking anything. A magnitude-7.7 earthquake also hit the Sagaing-Mandalay area on 28 March 2025, and several days in this plan involve sights with confirmed or reported quake damage, so treat the status notes below as load-bearing, not routine. The Sagaing Region across the river remains an active conflict zone. Some tourist spending here still reaches the military government, so if and when it’s safe to visit, favor small, independent, locally run operators. Official advice currently recommends against travel. This plan describes these places as they were and could be again.

Day 1: Mahamuni, Kuthodaw, and sunset on Mandalay Hill
Settle into a central guesthouse and spend the afternoon on the city’s core sights. Start at Mahamuni Pagoda, which took confirmed significant structural damage in the 2025 earthquake, so check its current status before you go, then Shwenandaw Monastery and Kuthodaw Pagoda, the “world’s largest book” spread across 729 marble slabs, which suffered serious structural damage in the earthquake. The current condition and access of all of these sights are unconfirmed. Mandalay Hill’s covered stairways were the traditional climb for sunset, and access is unconfirmed since the earthquake.
Day 2: Crafts, Zegyo Market, and the Palace moat
Spend the morning watching Mandalay’s living craft trades, the hand-pounded gold-leaf workshops and carving trades, then Zegyo Market. In the afternoon, walk the moat around the Royal Palace, a 1990s reconstruction inside an active military zone whose gates and walls took further damage in 2025. Spend the evening in a tea shop over laphet yay.
Day 3: The ancient capitals, Amarapura to Sagaing
A full day across the river. Amarapura’s U Bein Bridge has an unverified quake status either way; Inwa lost an estimated 75% of its historical structures, with the Maha Aungmye Bonzan monastery reported nearly destroyed; Sagaing, almost at the epicenter, saw heavily damaged. Verify current access at each before treating it as open. Sagaing lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel.
Day 4: Mingun by boat
A slow boat roughly 11km up the Irrawaddy to King Bodawpaya’s deliberately unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi stupa and the Mingun Bell. Hsinbyume Pagoda nearby is reported largely destroyed. Mingun lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Verify current ferry schedules before committing your morning; spend the afternoon back in the city at your own pace.
Day 5: Pyin Oo Lwin, the cooler hill station
A day trip about 67km east to the colonial-era hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin, noticeably cooler than Mandalay’s furnace heat. The National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens, established in 1915 and covering roughly 177 hectares, and the roughly 122-meter Anisakan Falls are the highlights. Pyin Oo Lwin lies in the area where the UK advises against all travel, rocket attacks have hit the town, and the current condition and access of the gardens and falls are unconfirmed.
