3 Days in Riyadh: First-Timer Plan
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
Read this before you book. Saudi Arabia is under a US State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory over Iranian and Houthi drone and missile risk from the regional conflict active since February 2026, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh Province, plus all travel within 10km of the Yemen border. No strike has been confirmed inside Riyadh city itself, and flights through King Khalid International can be disrupted, so check with your airline. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking. This plan is written for a well-planned, precaution-first visit, not a “go now” one.
Three days takes the 2-day core , old and modern Riyadh, and adds a half-day at Diriyah, the birthplace of the Saudi state and the closest UNESCO World Heritage site to the city itself.
Book these before you go

Day 1: Old Riyadh
Morning
Masmak Fortress (c.1865, site of Ibn Saud’s 14 January 1902 recapture of the city), free entry, closed Fridays, then Souq Al Zal next door, trading since 1901.
Afternoon
National Museum of Saudi Arabia (free) and Murabba Palace in the Al Murabba district.
Evening
Dinner at Najd Village or Takya, traditional Najdi cooking, jareesh and kabsa.
Day 2: Modern Riyadh
Morning
Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge (SAR 138), 302 meters, best early for photos.
Afternoon
Al Faisaliyah Center’s golden globe, then the Blue Line to KAFD for its Zaha Hadid-designed towers.
Evening
Dinner at The Globe inside Al Faisaliyah, or a casual spot on Olaya Street.
Day 3: Diriyah
Morning
Drive or Careem about 15-20 minutes northwest to At-Turaif , UNESCO World Heritage site #1329, the mud-brick seat of the First Saudi State, founded 1727. You’ll need the Diriyah Access Pass (roughly SAR 50-100, seasonal, kids 12 and under free).
Afternoon
Lunch and an unhurried walk through Bujairi Terrace, the dining and culture quarter right alongside At-Turaif, over 20 restaurants in the same Najdi style, try Jareed Samhan or Maiz Riyadh. Browse guided Diriyah tours if you’d like a guide who covers the site’s history in depth.
Evening
Return to Riyadh for a final dinner, or stay in the Diriyah/Al Bujairi area if that’s your base for the night.
Should I add Diriyah or a desert day trip with only three days?
Diriyah first. It’s the closer trip, a half-day round trip versus a full day for the Edge of the World, and it’s the site most first-timers regret skipping. If you have a fourth day, the 4-day itinerary adds the Edge of the World on top of this exact plan.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Masmak, Souq Al Zal, National Museum | Museum free |
| 2 | Kingdom Centre, Al Faisaliyah, KAFD | SAR 138 Sky Bridge |
| 3 | At-Turaif, Bujairi Terrace | SAR 50-100 Access Pass |
Check the current official advisory again before you finalize Diriyah transport. For the shorter version of this plan, see the 2-day itinerary ; for more days, see the 4-day itinerary .
One concrete tip: book your Diriyah Access Pass online through the official site before you arrive, walk-up availability on busy evenings and weekends can be limited.
