4 Days in Riyadh: First-Timer Plan

Read this before you book. Saudi Arabia is under a US State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory over Iranian and Houthi drone and missile risk from the regional conflict active since February 2026, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh Province, plus all travel within 10km of the Yemen border. No strike has been confirmed inside Riyadh city itself, and flights through King Khalid International can be disrupted, so check with your airline. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking. This plan is written for a well-planned, precaution-first visit, not a “go now” one.

Four days takes the 3-day core , old Riyadh, modern Riyadh, and Diriyah, and adds a full day at the Edge of the World, Riyadh’s single most popular excursion.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Old Riyadh

Morning

Masmak Fortress and Souq Al Zal, walkable together, closed Fridays.

Afternoon

National Museum of Saudi Arabia and Murabba Palace.

Evening

Dinner at Najd Village, traditional Najdi cooking.

Day 2: Modern Riyadh

Morning

Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge (SAR 138), 302 meters.

Afternoon

Al Faisaliyah’s golden globe, then KAFD via the Blue Line.

Evening

Dinner at The Globe inside Al Faisaliyah.

Day 3: Diriyah

Morning

At-Turaif , UNESCO site #1329, with the Diriyah Access Pass (roughly SAR 50-100).

Afternoon

Lunch and a walk through Bujairi Terrace, over 20 restaurants alongside the ruins.

Evening

Return to Riyadh, or overnight near Diriyah if you’d rather stay closer for an early start the next morning.

Day 4: Edge of the World

Morning

Depart early, about 90-100km northwest, 1.5-2 hours’ drive, most of it needing a 4x4 for the unpaved final stretch to the Tuwaiq Escarpment.

Afternoon

Walk the escarpment rim, roughly 300 meters above the desert floor, with lunch either packed or arranged through your tour operator.

Evening

Time the return for sunset light on the cliffs if your tour allows it, then head back to Riyadh for a final dinner.

Is the Edge of the World worth a full day?

Yes, given the 3-4 hour round-trip drive alone. Don’t try to combine it with Diriyah or the Red Sand Dunes in the same day, the drive times don’t leave room for it. If you’d rather do the Red Sand Dunes instead or as well, the 5-day itinerary adds that as a fifth day.

One concrete tip: book your Edge of the World tour the day before, not the morning of, popular operators with real 4x4 vehicles fill up fast, especially November through March.
